The Prime Minister’s remarks regarding the pursuit of closer ties with the European Union are a positive development, as noted in Starmer’s call for a bold new framework for UK-EU relations amid Trump’s threats to withdraw from NATO. However, a fragmented strategy aimed at mending the rifts caused by Brexit is unlikely to yield effective results.

A truly “ambitious” initiative would involve the Labour Party proposing a referendum to assess public support for initiating discussions on rejoining the EU. Should the populace favor this move, the party could commit to a general election to obtain a mandate for implementation. This strategy would enable the government to take the lead and create a unifying issue around which to gather extensive electoral backing.

Such a proposal would also highlight the growing hesitation among Reform UK and Conservative Party members to champion Brexit, while countering claims of betraying the British electorate.

Most importantly, it would offer a viable path for reinstating the UK’s position within the EU at a time when global dynamics necessitate such a shift more than ever.
