Mystifying UFOs Appear Above the Oval: Students Advised to Keep Their Observations Confidential

This year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the enigmatic “Westall incident,” a significant event in Australian UFO history.

At the age of 13, Tania Vassie was enjoying a day at school when she glanced up at the clear autumn sky and spotted a peculiar, rounded disc hovering above her. Captivated, she observed the object darting swiftly in various directions.

In a state of excitement, she rushed into the school, shouting, “Flying saucer, flying saucer!” Tania recalls, “Children came from everywhere; teachers came from everywhere.”

This marked the beginning of one of Australia’s most captivating mysteries—an occurrence so extraordinary that it has been surrounded by conspiracy theories. It is only recently that Tania has felt at ease discussing what she witnessed 60 years ago.

She was not alone in her sighting. A multitude of individuals, both students and teachers, gathered on the school grounds, some filled with awe and others with fear, as an unidentified flying object glided above Westall High School and the nearby primary school in Melbourne’s southeastern region on April 6, 1966. Some observers even reported seeing up to three separate objects.

This incident stands as the largest mass UFO sighting in Australia’s history.

While many UFO enthusiasts advocate for the theory of extraterrestrial visitation, others propose that the explanation may be more terrestrial. Ken Stallard, a former student and retired principal at Westall, suggests that the object could have been part of a classified military project, though he acknowledges it was undeniably a UFO. “I saw what I saw, along with all my classmates, hundreds of us,” he asserts. “It was unidentified, it was flying, and it was clearly an object.”

Richard Saunders from Australian Skeptics Inc does not dispute that something unusual occurred that day. “The challenge lies in finding the most plausible explanation without resorting to fantastical notions or the unlikely scenario of an alien spacecraft,” he explains. “People tend to leap to an outlandish conclusion rather than simply admitting, ‘We just don’t know.’

Grant Lavac, a researcher focused on the Westall case, notes that some skeptics suggest the phenomenon could be attributed to mass hysteria. “While I don’t think it can be entirely dismissed, in the absence of concrete evidence, I rely on the testimonies of those who witnessed the event. It is clear they saw something,” he says.

James Fox, a filmmaker from the U.S. known for his 2020 documentary “The Phenomenon,” which addresses UFO sightings in the U.S. and includes the Westall incident, maintains that most sightings can usually be clarified through conventional explanations. However, he argues that around 10 to 15 percent remain puzzling, and Westall is one such case. “The importance of the Westall incident is underscored by the multitude of eyewitnesses who have consistently recounted the same experience over the past six decades,” he states.

Numerous witnesses also report that shortly after the sighting, men in uniforms appeared near the school, where some claimed to have seen the craft land. Following this, the school principal gathered the students to inform them that what they had seen was merely a weather balloon and instructed them not to discuss the incident. Several students were taken into a room where unidentified individuals advised them to remain silent about their observations.

On this 60th anniversary, many witnesses are seeking answers. With most of them now retired, they are less concerned about potential ridicule or job repercussions for speaking out. Questions linger about the nature of the objects. Were they top-secret military prototypes? Why is there a lack of government documentation regarding these events?

“What frustrates me, along with my fellow classmates,” Tania, now a marketing and business manager, expresses, “is the effort to suppress the truth. If it was truly inconsequential, then let’s clarify it. I believe that is what everyone desires. Please, tell us what it was.”

Witnesses describe a scene filled with students and teachers gazing skyward, pointing in amazement. The accounts from former students remain remarkably consistent. Ken Stallard recalls a large, circular silver object that was “easily visible.” Former nurse Marilyn Smith describes it as an oval shape, roughly the size of two or three cars, with no windows. Joy Clarke notes its incredible speed and metallic shine, complete with a dome in the center.

Meanwhile, Terry Peck, who identifies herself as a “naughty” student, recalls how she and her peers jumped over the school fence to pursue the “saucer-shaped” craft as it drifted towards a nearby area of bush known as the Grange. “It was this peculiar object hovering above the ground, quite substantial—about one-and-a-half times the size of a large car,” she recounts. She watched in awe as the craft slowly ascended, tilting onto its side before shooting straight into the sky at almost instantaneous speed.

After the object departed, Terry and several other students noticed a peculiar pattern of yellowed grass left behind, along with a lifetime of unanswered questions.

According to Mr. Saunders, the consistency among witness testimonies should be approached with skepticism. “A common misconception is that we possess reliable memories. We do not,” he cautions. “When people align their recollections, it can create a group reinforcement of a shared narrative, which, while natural, can also lead to misleading conclusions.”

Curiosity drove former teacher and public servant Shane Ryan to seek answers in 2005, and he has been investigating the incident ever since.
