Stephen Fleming’s extensive experience coaching the Chennai Super Kings has equipped him with a remarkable calmness, even amid challenging times. Following the team’s third defeat of the season, which has not started well, Fleming emphasized the need for patience during transitions and highlighted the promising young talent within the squad. “We have some exceptional talent here,” he stated, noting that five or six new players have joined this season, and he believes they will prove valuable in the future.
Concerns have arisen regarding the team’s auction strategies, particularly the focus on young Indian players at the expense of veteran members. For example, the acquisition of Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Prashant Veer and wicket-keeper Kartik Sharma from Rajasthan for a total of Rs 28.4 crore accounted for nearly 70 percent of their auction budget. Fleming explained that last season’s review necessitated significant investment in Indian talent to rejuvenate the franchise and establish a solid foundation for the future.
“We lost several key players who contributed to our core, whether in the Indian batting lineup or the overall team, leading to investments aimed at future growth,” he elaborated. Historically, CSK has depended on a strong group of experienced domestic batsmen, such as Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, and Kedar Jadhav, who were all seasoned players at the time of their recruitment, unlike Prashant Veer.
In response to a follow-up question, Fleming provided further insight into the strategy of recruiting uncapped Indian players. “The challenge is that other teams are also targeting uncapped players, making it increasingly competitive. We are continuously assessing the direction of the game and aiming to secure players who we believe have the potential to become stars,” he explained.
While the batting lineup has struggled to perform cohesively, the team’s bowling has been particularly concerning. In two of their three matches, CSK scored over 200 runs but failed to defend 209 against the Punjab Kings and were overwhelmed by RCB, who scored 250 runs. Except for Khaleel Ahmed, no bowler has managed to maintain an economy rate below 10 runs per over. The death bowling has been especially ineffective, as RCB scored 97 runs in the last five overs. Fleming, however, attributed some of the issues to the Impact Player rule, a sentiment echoed by many of his coaching peers. “Bowling is under immense pressure in the IPL, particularly with the impact rule. We’re seeing players take aggressive approaches with high skill levels,” he remarked.
He acknowledged the skill and innovative approach of the RCB batters and contemporary hitters in general. “They possess a lot of skill and creativity, reflective of modern cricket. While it’s easy to criticize the bowlers, they are under substantial pressure on good pitches to contain such players,” he pointed out.
Fleming returned to discussing the Impact Player rule, suggesting that it has encouraged players to take more risks. “With the additional player, there’s less fear, and this mentality allows players to be more aggressive. It’s challenging for bowlers when conditions favor batting, leading to explosive performances,” he commented.
He concluded by reiterating the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Impact Player rule. “I’m unsure how long it will remain or if it will become a permanent fixture, but it certainly alters the dynamics of the game, leaning towards batting strength,” he noted. “One wonders how long this rule will last. Will all-rounders make a comeback, or will the focus remain on aggressive batsmen? I hope to see a more balanced contest between bat and ball,” he added.
Despite Sanju Samson’s recent struggles with three consecutive single-digit scores, Fleming remains unfazed. “It’s just the nature of T20 cricket; he won’t score in every match. He had a close call today, but he’s in good form and training well. When he finds his rhythm, he often becomes a match-winner,” he remarked.
