Have you ever gone through a breakup and then felt like you keep running into your ex everywhere? That’s how I’ve been feeling since relocating back to London from New York. It seems like I can’t go a single day without spotting a Trader Joe’s tote bag. I’m aware of this cultural crossover—where Brits carry these bags and Americans favor Daunt Books tote bags—but it’s still surprising to see them nonchalantly draped over seats on London buses. It’s reminiscent of unexpectedly encountering your teacher in a Hawaiian shirt at a holiday resort; it just feels off.
For those unfamiliar, Trader Joe’s is a popular grocery store chain in the United States, known for its quirky snacks and convenient meal options that are perfect for when you’re too lazy to cook. The limited-edition Thanksgiving stuffing kettle chips? They haunt my dreams. The crispy okra and onion chips? I long for their return. And let’s not forget the fruity jellies; I’ve received multiple care packages from friends in Brooklyn filled with these treats since I moved back, and I can’t express how grateful I am every time.
It seems that Marks & Spencer is attempting to emulate this concept with its own array of snacks. Social media, particularly TikTok, is buzzing with recommendations to try their speckled egg cookies and the “clouds” range, which features nutty, crunchy, and crispy delights. I can’t deny my curiosity; I’ve discovered the tomatillo and jalapeño corn tortilla crisps and am completely hooked (my child is as well), and I’ve had a long-standing fondness for Percy Pig. While I might chuckle at it all, I genuinely appreciate the effort being made.
