Vijaykumar Vyshak is making a name for himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and in order to thrive in this competitive arena, the Punjab Kings bowler aims to consistently reach the speed of 150 km/h while also enhancing his skill set with various bowling techniques.
With five wickets taken in just two matches, Vyshak has already surpassed his previous season’s tally of four wickets from five outings. He began his IPL career with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023 before transferring to the Punjab Kings.
The 29-year-old cricketer from Karnataka has garnered attention this season for his effective wide yorkers and slower bouncers. In a recent match against Chennai Super Kings, he successfully dismissed the in-form Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan, helping restrict the opposing team to a total of 209 runs, which his team successfully chased down.
The Punjab Kings have utilized Vyshak throughout all phases of the game, and he is embracing the challenge that comes with it.
In a landscape focused on video analysis, Vyshak acknowledges that constant improvement is essential for success. “I may not bowl as fast as others, who are hitting speeds of 154 or 155 km/h. I typically bowl in the range of 140 to 144 km/h. However, I thrive on challenges, and it doesn’t matter where I bowl,” he remarked during a media session ahead of the upcoming away match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Having played across all formats, Vyshak received his first call-up to the Indian T20 squad for the 2024 tour of South Africa, although he did not get a chance to play. His aspiration is to represent India in Test cricket, but he equally wants to excel in the T20 format.
During the off-season, Vyshak dedicated himself to rigorous training with his coaches and Karnataka teammates to prepare for the IPL. “You cannot step onto such a grand stage without hard work. I genuinely believe that the effort you put into practice reflects in your performance during games,” he explained.
“I am fortunate to have supportive coaches and to draw motivation from my senior players in Karnataka. Although our domestic team did not qualify, I gained considerable confidence from my role as the lead bowler, which is crucial in the competitive landscape of Indian cricket.”
On expanding his repertoire, Vyshak emphasized the importance of being prepared for each new season. “With every new season, it’s crucial to come equipped with variations. Teams now have access to video analysts, so continuous improvement is vital. I always strive to introduce a new delivery to my game,” he noted.
As a player who has leveraged the Impact Player rule introduced in the IPL in 2023, Vyshak appreciates its inclusion, despite recent criticisms from prominent Indian players like Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya.
