A BTech student’s disappearance, a family dispute, and a security breach: Unraveling the incident involving a man who stormed the Delhi Assembly gates.

Sarabjit Singh, aged 37, caused a security incident at the Delhi Assembly on Monday when he forcefully entered through a VIP gate. According to police reports, his actions stemmed from frustration directed at his brother-in-law, Harpreet, for failing to inform him about the disappearance of his nephew.

The family has been searching for 20-year-old Harman, a second-year BTech student, who went missing in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, three days prior. Prior to traveling to Delhi, Sarabjit had an argument with Harpreet while in Punjab, as stated by law enforcement officials.

Harman was last seen leaving Delhi by bus on April 1, and his last known location was identified as Nangal in Anandpur Sahib, where he reportedly turned off his mobile phone. He is a student at GTBIT College located in Hari Nagar, West Delhi, and resides in rented accommodations near the campus. The family of Harman resides in Lakhimpur Kheri, while Sarabjit is based in Pilibhit.

In a phone interview with The Indian Express, Harpreet disclosed that the family has been staying at a gurdwara in Anandpur Sahib while searching for Harman. “He last spoke to his mother on April 2, after which he turned off his phone. He seemed fine during the call, but he did not disclose his location when my wife inquired,” said Harpreet, who is both a farmer and a law graduate.

The family has created posters featuring Harman’s image, utilized social media platforms, and announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for any information leading to his whereabouts. Harpreet expressed concern, noting that Harman has always been diligent in his studies and has never gone missing like this before. “We don’t understand why he would do this. Our family is already distressed, and Sarabjit’s actions in Delhi have only intensified our troubles,” Harpreet added.

A senior police officer in West Delhi indicated that CCTV footage showed Harman leaving alone while carrying a bag. Search teams have been organized, including one dispatched to Anandpur Sahib.

Details of the events between April 2 and April 6 reveal that Harpreet arrived in Delhi late on April 2 to report Harman missing at the Hari Nagar police station. The family remained in the capital until they could trace Harman’s phone to Anandpur Sahib.

Harpreet recounted that he arrived in Anandpur Sahib on April 4, and on the following day, Sarabjit appeared in his vehicle, demanding to know why he had not been informed about Harman’s disappearance. “We initially chose not to disclose Harman’s situation to Sarabjit due to his ongoing treatment for depression over the past seven to eight years. We feared that this news would upset him, which ultimately proved to be the case,” he explained.

Harpreet continued, “He confronted me, questioning why I was not seeking assistance from the Delhi Police. He claimed to have contacted the Delhi Chief Minister. At that point, Sarabjit was not taking his medication, and when I reached out to his family in Pilibhit, they informed me he had not taken his medicines for a week. I requested them to send his prescription, but we were unable to obtain the medication here. The next morning (April 6), we are uncertain how he made his way back to Delhi,” Harpreet stated.

Sarabjit, who manages the family rice mill business alongside farming, has been known to exhibit aggressive behavior due to his mental health condition, according to Harpreet.

Following the incident, Sarabjit was apprehended in Roop Nagar about an hour after his unauthorized entry into the Assembly, where he reportedly attempted to meet Speaker Vijender Gupta. He remained on the premises for approximately six minutes before security personnel managed to detain him. Singh eventually drove away from the complex in his SUV, leaving behind a bouquet and a garland of marigolds, which he intended for Gupta.

Sarabjit is currently in the custody of the Delhi Police and is undergoing interrogation. On Monday, his elder brother, Avtar Singh, informed the media that local authorities had visited their residence and assured them of assistance in the investigation.
