Harry Maguire has expressed that playing for Manchester United is “the ultimate honour” following the announcement of his one-year contract extension, which includes the possibility of an additional season. The center-back faced difficulties under the management of Ruben Amorim, leading to uncertainty regarding his future. However, he has established himself as a crucial player in Michael Carrick’s squad as they compete for a spot in the Champions League.
The 33-year-old defender has accepted a reduction in his salary, moving away from his previous contract that was worth £190,000 per week and set to expire this summer. Since Carrick took over from Amorim, Maguire has been a constant presence on the field and earned a recall to the England national team last month. He featured in two matches under Thomas Tuchel, positioning himself for selection in the upcoming World Cup this summer.
Maguire shared his sentiments on his extended tenure, stating, “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes my family and I proud every single day. I am thrilled to continue my journey at this remarkable club for at least eight more seasons and to play in front of our passionate supporters, aiming to create more unforgettable moments together.”
He further emphasized the ambition and potential of the current squad, noting, “The determination throughout the entire club to contend for major trophies is evident to everyone, and I believe our best achievements are still ahead of us.”
Since joining Manchester United from Leicester City for a record fee of £80 million in 2019, Maguire has become the most expensive defender in the world. He has made 266 appearances for the club, contributing to their victories in the League Cup and FA Cup. The club is keen to retain Maguire’s experience and leadership, particularly in light of Casemiro’s impending departure this summer.
Maguire was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær shortly after his arrival at Old Trafford but was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag in 2023, who indicated his intention to sell the player.
Currently, Maguire is in Dublin with his teammates, taking advantage of a three-and-a-half-week break between matches, a result of the international break and their early exit from domestic cup competitions.
