Within the cozy apartment shared by Opal and Lana, a young queer couple residing in Dundee, an atmosphere of love permeates every corner. The walls are adorned with numerous photographs capturing their joyous adventures together, complemented by vibrant artworks created by Lana, who excels as a graffiti artist. On Opal’s makeup table, an array of stunning wigs awaits, which she uses to embody a glamorous drag persona during her nighttime performances. As a trans femme, Opal encounters significant societal discrimination; however, within the sanctuary of their home, they cultivate an environment filled with warmth and compassion.

In a media environment that often sensationalizes transgender experiences, director Mark Lyken takes a more intimate and realistic approach in his storytelling. The film creates a sense of camaraderie, as if viewers are friends spending time with Opal and Lana. The use of close-ups and interior scenes captures the beauty in everyday life, illustrating the couple’s deep connection through simple acts of kindness and shared responsibilities like cooking and cleaning. Given that both have endured rejection from their families, these everyday moments resonate deeply with significance.

The documentary aims to broaden the understanding of family and the definition of home. In a striking moment, Opal walks to a performance venue fully adorned in drag, while the camera captures the taunts and glances she receives from passersby. In stark contrast to this intolerance, queer nightlife offers a refuge. Under the vibrant glow of neon lights, with Lana behind the DJ booth and Opal dancing energetically, their anxieties fade away, replaced by the pulsating rhythm of electronic music. These exuberant experiences underscore the critical need for safe spaces where the queer community can unite and celebrate, functioning as a large, supportive family.
