Pune Experiences Its Coolest Maximum Temperature in Eight Years, Reaching 33°C

On Monday morning, Shivajinagar experienced a refreshing temperature of 17.8° C, which made for a pleasant start to the day. By afternoon, the temperature peaked at 33.1° C, a figure that is 4.3° C lower than the typical average for this time of year. Notably, this marked the coolest April day in a decade.

In other localities such as Pashan, Chinchwad, Hadapsar, and Wadgaonsheri, the maximum temperatures hovered around 32° C, while the National Defence Academy (NDA) registered a slightly cooler 31.8° C. Since 2015, when the Shivajinagar station recorded a high of 30.4° C, Pune has typically experienced temperatures ranging from 35 to 37° C during April.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that two Western disturbances are expected to impact northwest India this week, with the most significant effects anticipated on April 7 and 8. This weather pattern is likely to bring heavy rainfall to the Kashmir valley on April 7.

According to SD Sanap, a scientist at the IMD in Pune, “The presence of a Western Disturbance in the north brings cold and generally dry winds. Currently, the predominance of northerly winds is contributing to the drop in temperatures in our region.”

This climatic condition is also responsible for lowering minimum temperatures. Areas like Lavale and NDA recorded morning temperatures of 15.8° C, while Pashan and Talegaon were slightly warmer at 16.7° C. Hadapsar recorded the highest minimum temperature at 20.7° C, with Chinchwad close behind at 19.7° C.

However, residents can expect a return of warmer weather within the next few days, with both maximum and minimum temperatures forecasted to rise by 2 to 3° C. The IMD predicts that by April 11, maximum temperatures could hit 40° C in regions such as Koregaon Park and Lohegaon, as clear skies are expected.

Across various districts, maximum temperatures remained below seasonal norms. Wardha recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38° C, which is 2.5° C below average. Meanwhile, Mahabaleshwar experienced the lowest minimum temperature of 13.9° C, falling 4.8° C short of normal. Sanap noted that the IMD’s monthly forecast suggests below-normal temperatures throughout April, with five to six days expected to remain cooler, followed by one or two warmer days.

No rainfall was reported in the state on Monday. The weather office confirmed that the system responsible for recent hailstorms, thunderstorms, and unusually high rainfall in Pune has moved away. Currently, a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls is in effect only for Vidarbha until April 2.
