Savannah Guthrie, the well-known host of NBC’s Today show, made her return on Monday after an extended absence due to the mysterious disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. This marked her first appearance in over two months since her mother was reported missing on February 1.
As the show commenced, Guthrie expressed her readiness to resume her role, stating, “Here we go, ready or not.” She took a moment to acknowledge the support she has received from fans, thanking them after the broadcast outside Rockefeller Center.
The search for Nancy Guthrie continues, yet authorities have not disclosed any new developments in the case for several weeks. The 84-year-old mother of three is believed to have been taken against her will from her residence in Arizona, prompting a large-scale search effort involving numerous federal and local law enforcement officials as well as volunteers. Unfortunately, there have been no leads regarding her whereabouts.
During her first day back, Guthrie covered a series of news stories, concluding with, “It’s good to be home.” Her co-anchor, Craig Melvin, welcomed her back by saying, “It’s good to have you back at home.”
Recognized as a prominent figure in morning television since joining Today in 2012, Guthrie wore a yellow dress as a tribute to the yellow flowers placed outside her mother’s home. Her co-hosts also donned yellow ribbons in solidarity.
While the Today show has closely followed Nancy Guthrie’s case over the past couple of months, the topic was not addressed during the first hour of Monday’s episode. However, in the latter part of the show, Savannah interacted with fans gathered outside, visibly emotional when she saw a supporter wearing a shirt that read, “Welcome home Savannah.”
Ongoing investigations by authorities indicate a belief that Nancy Guthrie was abducted, as evidence of blood was discovered near her Tucson home. Family members have been ruled out as suspects, with Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos reporting that “all siblings and spouses” have cooperated with the investigation.
The FBI has released surveillance footage of a masked individual on Nancy’s porch and has found DNA from a glove near her home, but so far, there have been no matches. In the initial weeks following her disappearance, search teams and volunteers thoroughly examined the surrounding desert area, and the Guthrie family offered a reward of $1 million for information that could lead to her recovery. Recently, however, the flow of tips has diminished, and investigators have not shared any new findings.
In an Easter Sunday video message from her New York church, Savannah spoke candidly about her struggles, expressing feelings of deep disappointment and abandonment. Nevertheless, she emphasized the importance of acknowledging grief and pain alongside the celebration of resurrection.
When announcing her return to the flagship morning show, Guthrie expressed uncertainty about her ability to fit back in, stating, “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness.” In a previous interview, she shared her inner conflict about returning, saying, “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family.”
