Tovino Thomas reflects on his journey of overcoming rejection and prejudice in the industry: “Faced constant insults and encountered fraudsters seeking payment for roles.”

Currently recognized as a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema, Tovino Thomas’s ascent to stardom was anything but straightforward. As a newcomer without any connections within the film industry, he began his journey fueled solely by an unwavering ambition to become an actor—a dream he had nurtured since his youth. After finishing his education, he took up a job as a software engineer while simultaneously exploring the world of modeling. His persistence eventually led him to make his acting debut in 2012 with the film Prabhuvinte Makkal, directed by Sajeevan Anthikad.

However, it was his role as the antagonist in Martin Prakkat’s ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi in 2013, where he starred alongside Dulquer Salmaan, that brought him significant recognition. Since that breakthrough, Tovino has established himself as a dynamic talent among his contemporaries, taking on a diverse array of roles. While not every project has met with success, he continues to embrace challenges and take creative risks.

One of his most significant risks was leaving his stable job as a software engineer to pursue acting full-time, a decision he made even before proving his abilities in the industry. Reflecting on his early experiences, Tovino has shared that he faced considerable skepticism from industry veterans, some of whom suggested that he “didn’t look Malayali enough.”

In a 2015 interview, he recounted these early rejections: “There were numerous individuals who told me I didn’t have the ‘right face’ for Malayalam cinema or that my physique didn’t align with industry standards. They doubted my Malayali identity, primarily because I had dedicated myself to bodybuilding. When I first approached industry professionals, many dismissed me outright, thinking I must be unaware of acting basics due to my appearance.”

During an episode of Manorama News’ Nere Chowe, Tovino elaborated on the challenges and insults he faced at the start of his career. “I worked tirelessly just to make my screen debut. I encountered many who told me my face wasn’t suitable for Malayalam cinema. I even met con artists posing as directors, demanding payment for acting roles. When I said I had no money, they had the audacity to ask how much I could pay them.”

He also recalled instances of disrespect he encountered as an aspiring actor. “There were occasions when I was made to wait for hours, only to be informed that there were no roles available. One time, when I requested a chapati on set, I was told, ‘There’s rice; go eat that.’ When I asked for a wet tissue to remove my makeup, I was told to wash it off at the tap. I faced humiliation at every turn.”

Despite these challenges, Tovino found motivation in the difficulties he experienced. “Even when people insulted me for not liking their stories, I remember everything. However, I don’t view this as a warning for others. I treat those who wronged me with respect today. Even though my situation has improved, I don’t see the need to retaliate. There’s a certain satisfaction in responding with grace.”

Over a career spanning more than 13 years, Tovino Thomas has taken on numerous roles that have garnered widespread admiration. From ABCD’s Akhilesh Varma to Minnal Murali’s titular character, his performances have left a lasting impact on audiences. He has also received accolades, including a Kerala State Film Award for his triple role in Ajayante Randam Moshanam.

As Tovino prepares for the release of the historical action film Pallichattambi, directed by Dijo Jose Antony, anticipation is high. The movie, written by S Suresh Babu and featuring Kayadu Lohar as the lead actress, is set to premiere globally on Friday, April 10.
