In a recent press conference, JD Vance criticized what he described as “one of the worst instances of foreign election interference” he has ever witnessed, targeting EU bureaucrats in Brussels for their actions against Hungary’s economy. He asserted that their motivations stem from a personal animosity towards Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, labeling their involvement as “disgraceful.”
Vance urged Hungarian voters to focus on candidates who prioritize their interests rather than those who are pro- or anti-Europe or pro- or anti-US. He expressed admiration for Orbán, stating, “I have seen a leader who fiercely advocates for Hungary’s interests.”
Despite the apparent contradictions in his statements, Vance concluded his endorsement of Orbán by reiterating that his presence in Hungary is partly due to the significant foreign interference from Brussels, which he condemned. He emphasized that he would not dictate how Hungarians should vote and suggested that Brussels bureaucrats should adopt the same approach.
The discussion then shifted to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where Orbán reiterated his willingness to facilitate peace talks with Russia. Vance echoed these sentiments, stating that the United States desires an end to the war and highlighted the complexities involved in achieving that goal. He argued that effective diplomacy, rather than grandstanding by politicians, is essential to resolve the conflict.
Vance praised Orbán’s insights into the needs of both Ukraine and Russia, acknowledging his role in fostering understanding necessary for peace. He expressed that Hungary would be an ideal venue for any future summits aimed at bringing leaders together, citing its history of statesmanship and commitment to peace.
Furthermore, Vance acknowledged Orbán as a “statesman” regarding the Russia-Ukraine situation and credited him, along with former President Trump, as key figures in efforts to resolve the conflict. He emphasized that Orbán’s leadership has been a significant and constructive force for peace.
Vance also discussed the shared values between the Trump administration and Orbán’s government, particularly in terms of defending Western civilization. He criticized what he referred to as “indoctrination” on gender issues and asserted the importance of upholding Christian values that underpin fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and the rule of law.
He asserted that there is a strong bond between the United States and Hungary, highlighting that few leaders have been willing to champion the principles of Western civilization, with Orbán being a notable exception. Vance underscored the extensive cooperation between the two nations, especially regarding energy security, praising Orbán as a pivotal leader in this area.
Vance did not shy away from criticizing other European leaders, suggesting they should have followed Orbán’s policies to mitigate the ongoing energy crisis. He expressed his desire for Europe to succeed and for families to have affordable energy. He concluded that Orbán’s approach could lead to a more prosperous and energy-secure Europe.
As the elections approach, Vance made a clear endorsement of Orbán, reflecting on their close partnership with the Trump administration. He expressed his eagerness to contribute positively to Hungary’s future.
