Arne Slot has cautioned that Liverpool could face another significant loss if they become complacent against Paris Saint-Germain during the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night. However, he is confident that his struggling squad has the potential to turn their season around by matching the European champions in a competitive manner.
The pressure surrounding Liverpool and their manager has escalated following a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals last Saturday. While captain Virgil van Dijk expressed his frustration by stating that the team “gave up” during the match at the Etihad Stadium, playmaker Florian Wirtz disagreed with that characterization. Both Wirtz and Slot acknowledged that a repeat of such a performance at Parc des Princes would be unacceptable.
Slot, who plans to have Alexander Isak available from the bench after a lengthy injury absence, remarked that Luis Enrique’s side has improved since their victory in last season’s Champions League. He warned that any mistakes from Liverpool would likely be exploited. He urged his players to “respond” to the embarrassment against City without delay.
“We have had periods in matches where we don’t perform well, and it often leads to immediate consequences, such as conceding goals,” Slot commented regarding the recent match. “In this instance, it was four goals from the four chances we allowed. However, the first 35 minutes of that game gave me confidence that we can stand toe-to-toe with teams like City and PSG, who are exceptionally challenging to face in open play. Their quality and management style make them formidable.”
Slot emphasized that if his team repeats the 20-minute lapse they experienced against City, they risk conceding another four goals to PSG, who are adept at capitalizing on such opportunities. He stressed the need for his players to maintain their focus and intensity throughout the entire match, warning that failing to do so would lead to another difficult evening similar to Saturday’s experience. He reflected on last year’s Champions League round of 16, where they suffered a deserved 4-0 defeat but managed to score a late consolation goal, which felt like an undeserved reward.
While Slot supported Van Dijk’s candid remarks about the defeat, Wirtz maintained he was unaware of the captain’s comments and disagreed with the notion that the team had given up. “I wasn’t aware of that statement, but I wouldn’t fully agree,” the German international said. “We continued to try to create chances to change the outcome. Of course, it’s tough to keep pushing when you’re down 3-0 or 4-0 late in the game, but we had opportunities, and losing 4-0 is not reflective of our standards.”
Wirtz conveyed confidence in the team’s capabilities, highlighting the strong character and talent within the squad, as well as the effective guidance from their manager. “The second leg at home could provide an advantage, and we’ll strive to secure a positive result for Anfield,” he noted.
Liverpool has managed just one victory in their last five matches, with their only win coming against Galatasaray in the second leg of the last 16 at Anfield. The manner of their FA Cup exit, characterized by conceding four goals in a short span, raised questions about the team’s morale and whether they are still committed to Slot’s leadership. Wirtz responded affirmatively, stating, “Yes, we absolutely believe in our manager.”
“The players have faith in the manager, especially considering they won the league last season. We have had many strong performances this season, and while we hoped for better, there are still objectives to achieve. I can assure you that we trust the manager and will give our utmost during the match tomorrow,” he added.
Both Wirtz and Slot expressed the importance of keeping the tie competitive heading into the second leg at Anfield, with the coach indicating potential adjustments in tactics or personnel following the City loss. Ultimately, Slot believes that resilience is what can help Liverpool overcome their current struggles. “This club has a history of bouncing back from challenging situations,” he remarked. “We’ve faced numerous difficulties this season and have shown resilience, but we must continue to demonstrate that mentality of pushing through and recovering from setbacks.”
“While it’s easier said than done, this team has repeatedly proven it can recover after disappointments. Our squad can compete with the best teams in Europe, despite our recent performances,” he concluded.
