The FBI is currently investigating a shooting incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that took place on Tuesday in Patterson, California, near Interstate 5, according to Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons.
In a statement, Lyons indicated that ICE agents were attempting to apprehend a suspect believed to be associated with the 18th Street gang when he allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon, aiming to hit one of the officers.
Lyons further noted that the suspect is also wanted in El Salvador for questioning regarding a murder case.
“Our officers responded in accordance with their training, discharging their weapons in order to safeguard themselves, their colleagues, and the public,” Lyons explained.
The individual involved in the incident has been transported to a nearby hospital, although their medical status remains unknown.
Earlier that day, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office released a statement confirming their involvement in the investigation and mentioned that they had closed the relevant on and off ramps in the vicinity.
Patterson is located in California’s San Joaquin Valley and is known for its agricultural community.
