From Gopi to Gangotri: Allu Arjun’s Journey to Stardom Begins in Chiranjeevi’s Daddy

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Allu Arjun emerged onto the balcony of his home in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, where a large crowd of fans had gathered to celebrate his birthday. As the day unfolded, it was also revealed that his upcoming film with director Atlee would be titled “Raaka,” coinciding with his 44th birthday. This moment highlights his remarkable status as one of the highest-earning actors in Indian cinema, a recipient of the National Award, and a cultural icon whose dialogue from “Pushpa” has permeated everyday conversations across the nation.

However, Arjun’s journey to stardom was not always guaranteed. It began in a rather unexpected place: on a film set where he was not the lead actor.

In 2001, Chiranjeevi starred in the Telugu family drama “Daddy,” directed by Suresh Krissna and produced by Allu Aravind under the Geetha Arts banner. Chiranjeevi portrayed Raj Kumar, a wealthy owner of an audio company and a passionate dance school director whose kindness is exploited by those around him. Simran played the role of his wife, while Rajendra Prasad featured in a supporting capacity.

Allu Arjun made his appearance as Gopi Krishna, a dance student at Raj’s school. In a pivotal moment of the film, Raj decides to sacrifice the funds meant for his daughter’s medical care to save Gopi, who has been injured in an accident. This heartbreaking choice causes his wife Shanti to leave him.

At just 19 years old, Allu Arjun took on a supporting role that required minimal dialogue, yet it was significant as it placed him alongside one of the major stars of Telugu cinema in a project produced by his father.

To clarify, “Daddy” was not Allu Arjun’s first film appearance; that distinction belongs to the 1985 movie “Vijetha,” where a three-year-old Arjun made a brief, uncredited appearance alongside Chiranjeevi. This early role was so minor that it barely registered in his memory and remains largely unknown to the public.

The role in “Daddy” was more impactful as it was credited and intentional, occurring at a time when he was gearing up for his debut as a lead actor. Following “Daddy,” Allu Arjun honed his acting skills under the guidance of Kishore Namit Kapoor in Mumbai, the same mentor who would later train his cousin, Ram Charan.

On March 28, 2003, Allu Arjun debuted in “Gangotri,” directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and co-produced by Allu Aravind and C. Ashwini Dutt, marking a milestone as Raghavendra Rao’s 100th film as a director. He played a character named Simhadri. While the film received mixed reviews, it performed well commercially, running for 100 days in 54 centers—a commendable achievement for a debut.

The subsequent years saw Allu Arjun becoming a household name in Telugu cinema. His films “Arya” in 2004, “Bunny” in 2005, and “Desamuduru” in 2007 led to a decade filled with successful releases, culminating in “Pushpa: The Rise” in 2021, which elevated his career to new heights. In 2023, he was honored with the National Film Award for Best Actor, and “Pushpa 2: The Rule” achieved unprecedented box office success.
