General Motors is initiating a recall affecting over 270,000 Chevrolet Malibu cars in the United States due to concerns that the rearview camera may present a distorted or absent image on the display.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicated in a correspondence that a malfunctioning rearview image could hinder the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle, thereby elevating the likelihood of an accident.
A safety recall document from the agency noted that the issue stems from a problem identified by GM’s supplier concerning the bonding technique utilized in the assembly of the camera housing. This flaw may compromise the adhesive connection in certain assemblies. Additionally, GM’s investigation revealed that the installation setup of the Sharp Electronics camera in the Chevrolet Malibu might allow moisture to penetrate, potentially causing a failure in the housing bond.
This recall pertains to Chevrolet Malibu models manufactured between 2023 and 2025.
GM has stated that it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries linked to this issue.
Dealers will conduct free replacements of the rearview camera for affected vehicles.
Notification letters to owners are expected to begin distribution on May 18.
