A man who was shot by police after his mother requested a welfare check has been charged with assaulting law enforcement. The incident took place on April 1 on Akebia Street in Arana Hills, located to the north of Brisbane.
According to police reports, officers arrived at the scene and attempted to engage with the 19-year-old male when a confrontation occurred. It is alleged that the individual brandished a large kitchen knife, prompting officers to shoot him twice in the abdomen.
The man was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
He faces multiple charges, including three counts of serious assault against a police officer while armed and one count of serious assault of a police officer performing their duties while armed.
A bedside hearing is scheduled for this afternoon as part of the legal proceedings.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are currently being examined by the Ethical Standards Command, with the Crime and Corruption Commission providing oversight of the investigation.
Last week, law enforcement officials confirmed that the officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras that were active during the incident. It was also noted that a taser was deployed at the scene.
