Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly cherish this victory. Entering their third consecutive quarter-final in the Champions League, Arsenal sought redemption following disappointing exits in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. The Gunners delivered a tense performance against a determined Sporting side, who could have taken an advantageous lead ahead of next week’s return leg in North London had they capitalized on their opportunities.
Fortunately for Arsenal, Kai Havertz emerged as a hero once more, scoring in injury time, mirroring his decisive goal against Bayer Leverkusen in the previous round. Additionally, goalkeeper David Raya showcased his value to the team with several impressive saves. After the team’s recent setbacks against Manchester City and Southampton, this victory could provide the much-needed confidence boost as they prepare to face Bournemouth in their next domestic match.
Although Arsenal had previously dominated Sporting with a 5-1 victory in last season’s league stage, they encountered a revitalized opponent, buoyed by a remarkable comeback against Bodø/Glimt in the prior round. Sporting’s manager, Rui Borges, encouraged his players to seize this opportunity, as it marked the club’s first appearance at this stage of the competition since 1983. He made the strategic decision to include teenager João Simões in place of the suspended captain Morten Hjulmand, asserting, “They’re good, but so are we,” in a pre-match interview.
After a 13-year absence from the quarter-finals, Arsenal proved they could compete at this level again, although the absence of key players like Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Jurriën Timber, and Piero Hincapié, combined with their recent lack of confidence, made this match a potential pitfall.
This concern was evident just six minutes into the match when Ousmane Diomande split Arsenal’s defense with a brilliant pass. Raya, who had been rested during the previous defeats, was forced to make a spectacular fingertip save, redirecting Maxi Araújo’s powerful shot onto the crossbar. Striker Viktor Gyökeres, who had received a warm welcome from Sporting fans, barely touched the ball until the 11th minute as Arsenal struggled to find their footing early on.
Arsenal’s best opportunities seemed to arise from set pieces, but Martin Ødegaard squandered a promising chance after Noni Madueke’s corner hit the crossbar. In midfield, the partnership of Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi provided some control, though Ødegaard was guilty of losing possession in advanced areas, contributing to the team’s lack of creativity in open play.
Sporting midfielder Hidemasa Morita was left bewildered after receiving a yellow card for a foul on Leandro Trossard, despite evidence showing he had played the ball cleanly. Just before halftime, top scorer Luis Suárez lurked to capitalize on a poor back pass from Zubimendi, forcing Raya to clear the danger. Ødegaard finally managed to register Arsenal’s first shot on target in the 43rd minute, though Rui Silva easily dealt with his weak attempt, encapsulating the visitors’ lackluster first half.
The Norway captain attempted to inspire his team at the start of the second half, with a free-kick that Silva tipped over the bar, followed by Gabriel Magalhães narrowly missing a connection from the subsequent corner. Suárez nearly caught Arsenal off guard on the counter, but Raya’s header from the center circle cleared the threat. Sporting fans were further encouraged when Francisco Trincão fired a shot wide after a slick move down the left flank.
As the match progressed, the contest opened up. Zubimendi believed he had given Arsenal the lead with a well-placed shot from outside the box, only for the video assistant referee to disallow the goal for an offside in the buildup involving Gyökeres. With Sporting retreating deeper, Arsenal pressed forward, and Havertz’s introduction for Ødegaard indicated Arteta’s intention to secure a win.
Teenager Max Dowman also entered the fray alongside Gabriel Martinelli as Arsenal sought the crucial goal. Martinelli quickly tested Silva with a shot. Moments later, Raya denied tricky winger Geny Catano twice in quick succession, which proved vital as Martinelli set up Havertz for a composed finish, alleviating Arsenal’s nerves at a critical juncture.
