On Tuesday, Harpal Singh Cheema, the Minister of Finance, Planning, Excise, and Taxation for Punjab, announced that the Excise and Taxation Department has reached a remarkable achievement in revenue generation. As of March 31, the department collected Rs 11,782 crore, exceeding its target of Rs 11,200 crore by Rs 582 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26.
Cheema highlighted that the excise revenue has nearly doubled in the last four years, increasing from Rs 6,254.84 crore to Rs 11,782 crore. He also noted that a new revenue target of Rs 12,800 crore has been established for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This success, according to the minister, reflects the department’s dedication to enhancing revenue collection while upholding transparency and regulatory compliance.
The minister attributed this achievement to effective excise policy strategies and sound administrative practices, emphasizing the role of the state government’s proactive governance and business-friendly initiatives.
Cheema further mentioned that for the fiscal year 2026-27, the Excise Policy has been designed with a projected license fee target of Rs 10,520 crore, an increase from Rs 9,877 crore in 2025-26. He noted that all 207 retail liquor groups in the state have been assigned for the upcoming year, which demonstrates the confidence of licensees in the excise policies.
He concluded by stating that the overall reception of the Excise Policy for 2026-27 has been positive, ensuring stability within the liquor trade and a consistent revenue stream for the state treasury.
