Rex Heuermann, an architect from Long Island, has confessed to multiple murders linked to the infamous Gilgo Beach case that dates back to 1993. On Wednesday, he not only pleaded guilty to seven murders but also admitted to an additional eighth murder.
Heuermann has been in custody since his arrest on a Manhattan street in July 2023. During a court appearance in Riverhead, Long Island, he altered his plea to guilty regarding the killings of several women, whose remains were discovered years after they vanished.
The remains were primarily located in marshy areas along the southern coast of Long Island, particularly on Gilgo Beach, which has gained notoriety in this case.
Most of the victims, many of whom were sex workers, remained unidentified for an extended period. However, a breakthrough in the investigation emerged through the identification of Heuermann’s vehicle, cellphone data, and mitochondrial DNA connections to the victims. Following his arrest, Heuermann initially pleaded not guilty.
During the court proceedings, Judge Timothy Mazzei posed several questions to Heuermann regarding his willingness to change his plea. He affirmed that he was making this decision voluntarily, stating, “Yes, I am.”
In relation to the first charge concerning the murder of Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, Heuermann acknowledged his role in her death. When asked how he caused her demise, he responded with a chilling admission: “Strangulation.”
