Southampton surges past Wrexham with decisive victory, securing a playoff position.

Southampton solidified their position in the Championship playoff race with a commanding 5-1 victory over Wrexham, effectively swapping places with the Welsh team in the standings.

Riding the momentum from their impressive FA Cup quarter-final win against Arsenal, manager Tonda Eckert’s squad started strong at Stōk Cae Ras, scoring early with goals from Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes, after already striking the woodwork twice.

Wrexham managed to respond with a goal from Josh Windass, but a counterattack led to a strike from Cyle Larin, followed by late goals from Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz, which secured Southampton’s fifth consecutive win across all competitions. This triumph also marked their tenth match unbeaten in a run of 13 league games, propelling Southampton up to sixth place.

“The team is exceptionally focused right now,” Eckert remarked. “My role is to ensure they are well-prepared for the upcoming matches. With games scheduled for Saturday and Tuesday until the season concludes, the rhythm is beneficial. We need to finish games decisively, maintain humility, and continue our hard work.”

Southampton’s determination was apparent from the start, as both Larin and Azaz struck the bar in the eighth minute. Larin, after executing a subtle header from Ryan Manning’s cross, was unlucky, while Azaz, failing to capitalize on the rebound, also hit the woodwork. However, he quickly redeemed himself by assisting the first goal in the 12th minute, delivering a precise pass to Matsuki, who controlled the ball and placed it past a wrong-footed Arthur Okonkwo.

Maintaining control, Southampton doubled their lead ten minutes later when Wrexham failed to clear a free-kick from James Bree, allowing Downes to slam the ball into the net.

Wrexham struggled to create significant chances until the 33rd minute when Nathan Broadhead connected with a deflected cross, sending a header against the post. This spurred the home crowd, and shortly after, the hosts found the net. A long ball from Okonkwo was flicked on by Kieffer Moore, setting up Windass to execute a brilliant flick past Jack Stephens and into the bottom corner.

Larin had an opportunity to restore Southampton’s two-goal lead but shot over the bar. Early in the second half, he forced a good save from Okonkwo with a volley. After a deflected effort from Max Cleworth went just wide for Wrexham, Larin finally scored in the 61st minute, breaking free from halfway and delicately lifting the ball over Okonkwo.

Wrexham showed signs of resilience, with Moore hitting the post from close range, but Azaz quickly responded at the other end, hitting the upright. Southampton demonstrated their dominance nine minutes before the end when Stewart headed in from a Welington free-kick, and Azaz capped off the victory with another goal two minutes later.

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, reflected on the match, stating, “We need to take this as a lesson, even at this late stage of the season. If our performance levels drop, we can be severely punished. We were harshly punished during those first 20 minutes. We need to examine this closely to ensure we are prepared for the upcoming match.”
