The inaugural event of the Diamond League season in Doha, where India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the 90m mark last season, has been rescheduled to June 19, as confirmed by the organizers in a statement on Wednesday. Initially, the event was planned for May 8 at the Qatar Sports Club but has been postponed due to ongoing circumstances in West Asia.
The press release indicated that the Diamond League has been closely monitoring the situation in Doha over recent weeks, collaborating with event organizers, Qatari officials, and other relevant parties.
For the safety of both athletes and attendees, the decision to postpone the event was made, with the new date set for June 19 contingent on improved conditions. Furthermore, due to the anticipated higher temperatures in June, the venue has been changed from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium.
The Khalifa International Stadium, which previously hosted both the Diamond League and the World Athletics Championships in 2019, is equipped with temperature regulation technology, ensuring safe competition for athletes even in warmer weather.
The revised date for the event is positioned between the Bislett Games in Oslo on June 10 and the Meeting de Paris on June 28, making it the eighth stage in the 2026 Diamond League series.
The series will commence in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and conclude with the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4-5.
The Diamond League will continue to assess the situation in the Middle East over the upcoming weeks. Both the series and the event organizers are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for athletes, media, and spectators alike.
Recognized as the premier one-day meeting series in athletics, the Diamond League features 15 of the most esteemed events in the global track and field calendar. This series offers athletes the chance to compete at the highest level consistently throughout the outdoor season.
