Husband Reincarcerated After Allegations of Neglecting Dying Spouse

Kevin Stanischewski has been charged with manslaughter and failure to provide assistance following the tragic death of his wife in March 2024. Initially released on bail late last year, he has now returned to custody after being accused of violating his bail conditions multiple times.

The upcoming court proceedings are set for next month, as Mr. Stanischewski faces serious allegations related to his wife’s untimely demise. He has been accused of neglecting to assist her when he found her unconscious after she reportedly informed him of her intention to ingest poison.

In August of last year, Mr. Stanischewski was arrested and charged, 18 months after his wife’s death. Evidence presented in court suggested that he delayed seeking help for several hours after discovering her unresponsive. Prosecutor Tamara Grealy detailed that while his wife lay on the floor, he prepared a meal for himself and their young daughter.

“Earlier in the day, she communicated her intent to consume poison. However, he chose to leave her and returned at midday when she mentioned she had indeed ingested poison, yet he did not act. He came back at 3 p.m., found her unconscious, and noticed the presence of bodily excrement, but still took no action. At 8 p.m., he prepared a lasagna and shared a meal with his daughter,” Grealy explained.

Additionally, the court was informed that Mr. Stanischewski’s wife had faced significant mental health challenges in the years leading up to her death. As of now, Mr. Stanischewski has not entered a plea regarding the charges against him.

His attorney, Ian Rowbottam, indicated that Mr. Stanischewski had faced difficulties in communicating instructions due to challenges accessing the prison. During a recent appearance in the Supreme Court in Darwin, Justice Judith Kelly granted a brief adjournment to allow the lawyer to consult with his client about their next steps.

Rowbottam stated that his client would plead guilty to the first bail breach and acknowledged agreement on most aspects of the second breach, though he noted that some details still required clarification between the defense and prosecution.

He also mentioned the possibility of additional charges being filed, although the police had not yet specified what those charges would entail. “While we have the evidence, the specific charges are still pending,” he remarked.

Mr. Stanischewski will remain in custody until the case is revisited in court next month.
