The Kerala Assembly elections are set to take place on April 9, 2026, across all 140 constituencies, featuring a total of 883 candidates. The voting process will occur in a single phase, commencing at 7:00 AM and concluding at 6:00 PM. The results will be tallied on May 4, 2026.

The campaign period officially concluded on April 8, following the ‘kalashakottu,’ a significant campaign event that occurred on April 7, thereby initiating the mandatory silence period.

Kerala’s political scene is characterized by a longstanding rivalry between the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), and the United Democratic Front (UDF), headed by the Congress party. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as a formidable contender in this election cycle.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the leader of the CPI-M, is striving to secure a third consecutive term, while the UDF is eager to regain power. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is also eyeing a significant opportunity to enhance its influence in Kerala’s political framework.

In terms of party platforms and promises, the UDF has presented the “Indira guarantees,” which feature initiatives such as complimentary bus services for women, monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 for female college students, the Oomen Chandy health insurance plan, loans for youth startups, and an increase in welfare pensions to Rs 3,000.

Conversely, the LDF is emphasizing its achievements over the past decade in areas such as poverty alleviation, student assistance, women’s employment, tourism enhancement, and the expansion of the public sector.

Meanwhile, the BJP has pledged to introduce food security cards for families living below the poverty line (BPL), establish an AIIMS campus, provide free LPG cylinders to low-income families during Onam and Christmas, and raise the welfare pension to Rs 3,000.
