The administration of Kishtwar district has imposed a ban on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), citing concerns about potential misuse that could jeopardize public order and national security. This decision was announced on Wednesday by District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar Sharma.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, stems from credible reports indicating that certain individuals and groups were utilizing VPNs to circumvent legal cyber restrictions and access forbidden online platforms. The administration highlighted that such practices could be manipulated for illegal and anti-national activities, including the dissemination of provocative content, incitement of unrest, and the organization of unlawful actions. The authorities emphasized the urgent need to combat this misuse to protect cyber security, uphold public tranquility, and ensure effective governance within the district.
This prohibition is applicable to all residents, organizations, cyber cafes, commercial entities, and Internet Service Providers operating in Kishtwar, and it takes effect immediately.
