NASA Gears Up for Artemis II Splashdown as Astronauts Prepare for Tomorrow’s Pacific Recovery Efforts

On Wednesday evening, NASA announced that all operations related to the Artemis II mission are proceeding according to schedule. The mission will test a shorter re-entry range on Friday, a modification compared to its predecessor, Artemis I.

After successfully completing a 10-day journey that involved orbiting the Moon, Artemis II is set to return to Earth on Friday, April 10. The spacecraft is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast around 8 PM EDT (5:37 AM IST on April 11).

Debbie Korth, the Deputy Program Manager for Orion, stated, “All operations are proceeding smoothly and effectively. The Service Module will not be retrieved. Tomorrow, the crew will assess the condition of the crew module from the outside.”

As the crew prepares for their return, they will engage in activities related to re-entry, including rehearsing the use of their specialized astronaut suits, which are designed to help manage blood circulation during descent.

Flight Director Rick Henfling elaborated on the mission’s preparations, stating, “The crew will manually pilot the spacecraft to align it with a celestial object. Moreover, to showcase the spacecraft’s operational capabilities, they will orient the vehicle towards Earth and position its tail in the direction of the Sun to ensure adequate solar power.”

NASA has also confirmed that favorable weather conditions are anticipated for the splashdown, with expectations for calm winds, manageable wave heights, and no significant precipitation or thunderstorms during the landing.

In the past week, the Artemis II crew has transmitted approximately 312 gigabytes of data back to Earth. Thursday marked a peak in data transmission, with 122 gigabytes relayed to NASA’s ground teams, setting a new record.

In support of the Artemis II mission, the U.S. Navy has dispatched its crew rescue ship to the designated splashdown area in the Pacific Ocean. The naval teams are scheduled to conduct at least two practice drills before the actual splashdown takes place on Friday.
