Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has a unique approach to celebrating his birthdays, and this year was no exception. On Tuesday, he marked his 64th birthday, but it was on Thursday that he shared glimpses from his celebration via social media, accompanied by a tweet that provocatively stated: “STABBING my PAST with a KNIFE called Dhurandhar2.” The event was attended by notable personalities from the film industry, including Manoj Bajpayee, Genelia Deshmukh, and Isha Koppikar. The cake served at the gathering prominently displayed images and titles from Varma’s most celebrated films.
This tweet from Varma aligns with his recent commentary on social media. The film Dhurandhar 2, which premiered on March 19, has garnered attention as it was released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. Directed by Aditya Dhar and featuring Ranveer Singh in the leading role, it is a sequel to the hit film Dhurandhar, which debuted in December 2025 and amassed around 1,300 crore rupees globally. For Varma, the Dhurandhar series signifies a notable shift in cinematic storytelling.
In a previous post, Varma referred to Dhurandhar 2 as a “horror” for filmmakers whose careers rely on simplistic and exaggerated cinema, indicating it serves as a caution for those who expect audiences to disengage their critical thinking. He went on to describe the film as possessing “Sholay x 100 level magnificence,” proclaiming it as the dawn of a “new cinematic order.”
Currently, Varma is in the process of developing a film titled Syndicate, which he has described as a tribute to his “new guru Aditya Dhar,” much like his earlier works Satya, Company, and Sarkar were tributes to his former inspiration, Francis Ford Coppola.
Born on April 7, 1962, Varma made his debut in Telugu cinema with the groundbreaking crime thriller Siva in 1989, a film that transformed the landscape of commercial action cinema. He later produced hits like Rangeela, Satya, Company, and Sarkar, establishing himself as one of the most daring and technically adept directors in Indian cinema. However, in recent years, his reputation has faced challenges, with several of his projects not achieving the expected success.
