Ranjith Balakrishnan, a prominent figure in the Malayalam film industry, was arrested on March 31 due to allegations of sexual harassment, as noted by a colleague who described him as “one of the people.” This incident marks the third accusation against him, with a young actress claiming that he sexually assaulted her in a caravan on a film set earlier this year. Previously, two other harassment complaints emerged following the Hema Committee report, which addressed the challenges faced by women working in the industry.
Ranjith gained fame with his 1993 film, Devasuram, featuring renowned actors Mohanlal and Revathi. He wrote the script and collaborated with director IV Sasi, leading to the film’s success. In 2001, he made his directorial debut with Ravanaprabhu, a sequel to Devasuram, again starring Mohanlal. Additionally, in 2002, he introduced the young actor Prithviraj Sukumaran in his film, Nandanam.
Ranjith continued to achieve acclaim with later works, such as Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha (2009) and Pranchiyettan and The Saint (2010), both featuring Mammootty.
In his earlier years, Ranjith was often labeled a “man’s man,” with criticisms regarding the portrayal of women in his films. A colleague remarked that his dialogues, which resonated with younger audiences, implied that the male protagonist had unchecked freedom over the female lead. Another individual pointed out that such lines not only went unchallenged but were celebrated within Kerala’s cultural landscape.
Ranjith also forged a close association with the Left Democratic Front (LDF), having previously been involved with the CPI(M)’s student organization. A source revealed that his time with the Student Federation of India (SFI) shaped his character. His connection with the LDF deepened when he was appointed chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy.
However, behind the scenes, rumors of infidelity and alcohol issues surfaced, leading to his separation from his spouse. An insider noted his struggles with alcoholism, which often resulted in verbal altercations.
In response to the recent allegations, the Women in Cinema Collective highlighted that the actress did not initially report the incident to the Internal Committee (IC) established on film sets following the Hema Committee’s findings. A technician explained that a former IC member represented Ranjith in court until the situation was brought to light, prompting that individual to step aside.
An actress remarked that Ranjith continues to wield significant influence within the industry, stating, “He has a way of gaining people’s support. Many believe he should have received better treatment from law enforcement.”
Another insider noted the close relationships Ranjith shared with industry stalwarts like Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Prithviraj, who have distanced themselves from him since the harassment allegations surfaced in 2024. Despite this, numerous technicians and artists remain grateful to him for the opportunities he provided.
A film personality commented on Ranjith’s impact, describing his films as invaluable learning experiences for aspiring talent. “Many of us still view him as a mentor,” they said.
Looking ahead, some insiders speculate that Ranjith’s story may not conclude here. “Naavil Saraswathi (Goddess Saraswati reigns on his tongue). He has a knack for navigating difficult situations with his articulate speech,” one insider predicted.
