Drone imagery has captured the alarming sight of the roof of Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic velodrome engulfed in flames.
Approximately 80 firefighters were deployed to manage a fire at the velodrome, which was constructed for the 2016 Olympic Games in the city.
This venue also serves as the location of the Olympic Museum, showcasing various exhibits and artifacts from the Games.
Fortunately, officials confirmed that there were no reported injuries related to the incident.
The fire, which occurred in the Olympic Park, was brought under control early Wednesday morning, local time. Firefighters ensured that the blaze posed no threat to surrounding areas, and no injuries were documented, according to fire department representatives.
Emergency services responded to the scene at 4:17 AM, deploying around 80 firefighters alongside 20 fire trucks to combat the flames. The military fire department of Rio de Janeiro stated that there were no casualties.
The velodrome, managed by the city, is the largest facility for track cycling in Brazil and plays a significant role in training both the national weightlifting and cycling teams.
It is home to the Olympic Museum, which includes notable items such as the Olympic torch and medals from the Games.
Firefighters worked diligently on both the interior and exterior of the structure, focusing on protecting the valuable artifacts within the Olympic Museum that were in jeopardy, as noted by Lieutenant Colonel Fabio Contreiras in a discussion with CNN Brasil.
Following the incident, forensic teams began evaluating the damage, particularly as the flames had reached the canvas ceiling of the velodrome. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere addressed the media, stating, “The fire had minimal impact on the velodrome and the Olympic Museum.”
In 2017, the velodrome experienced two separate incidents of fire, which resulted in minor damage.
