The ongoing dispute regarding the will and estate of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur continues to attract significant media attention as family tensions escalate. The legal conflict was instigated when the children of actress Karisma Kapoor approached the Delhi High Court, claiming that their father’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, had forged Sunjay’s will. This dispute has also extended to the RK Family Trust, where Priya, acting as both a trustee and beneficiary, issued a notice to remove Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, from her position as trustee, effective March 25.
In a recent interview, Rani Kapur discussed her relationship with Karisma and her grandchildren, Samaira and Kiaan, shedding light on the ongoing legal struggle. Speaking to ANI, she reflected on her close connection with her son Sunjay, asserting, “If Sunjay Kapur were alive today, Priya would not have dared to instigate a dispute. When he was alive, she never spoke out against me. I was very close to Sunjay; he never took a holiday without me and always made sure I wasn’t left alone.”
Rani also mentioned that she maintains a relationship with Sunjay’s children from his second marriage to Karisma Kapoor, stating, “He was married to two amazing women, and he had a lovely family. I often see his two children from his second marriage.”
Sunjay Kapur held the position of chairman at Sona Comstar. His first marriage to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani took place in 1996 and ended four years later. He subsequently married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, with whom he had two children: daughter Samaira, born in 2005, and son Kiaan, born in 2011. The couple filed for divorce in 2014, which was finalized in 2016. Following their separation, Sunjay wed Priya Sachdev, and they welcomed a son named Azarias. Sadly, Sunjay passed away on June 12 of the previous year in England.
The value of Sunjay’s estate, estimated at Rs 30,000 crore, has become the focal point of a contentious legal battle involving his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, his children Samaira and Kiaan from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor, and his mother Rani Kapur. Central to the dispute is a will that allegedly designates the entirety of Sunjay’s personal assets to Priya, a claim his children contest in the Delhi High Court, alleging it is forged and dubious.
Additionally, a separate conflict has arisen over the RK Family Trust, with Rani Kapur accusing Priya of fraudulently establishing the trust to misappropriate family assets and seeking its annulment in court. The case has escalated further, with allegations of hidden assets, control over international properties, and competing claims for trusteeship, rendering it a complicated inheritance dispute with multiple legal challenges.
Priya Sachdev has also lodged a criminal defamation suit against Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith.
This report provides an overview of the ongoing legal proceedings and delicate family issues surrounding estate inheritance and trust management.
