Congress politician Pawan Khera has submitted a request for anticipatory bail to the Telangana High Court in response to an FIR filed against him by the Guwahati crime branch, based on a complaint from the spouse of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The case is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday.
Khera has been accused by the Assam Police of providing misleading information, forgery, cheating, criminal intimidation, and conspiracy. A police team even visited his residence in Delhi on Tuesday with intentions to arrest him.
In a statement made on Wednesday, Khera asserted that he would not succumb to intimidation and brought forth new allegations regarding Sarma’s family. In a video message released later that day, he stated, “The tactics employed by the Assam Police have been evident over the past few days. This situation is not just about the Assam Police; it involves the Chief Minister of Assam and likely the Home Minister as well.”
Khera further alleged that a company linked to Himanta’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, is registered in Wyoming, USA, and identified a London address as its primary location, along with two other addresses in Dubai and Dhaka. He claimed that this London address is connected to “Bhuyan Properties Ltd” according to records in the UK.
Additionally, he reiterated previous claims regarding Sarma’s wife holding passports from Egypt and Antigua and Barbuda, along with a golden visa for the UAE. “Did you, a family member, or one of your agents establish these fraudulent shell companies using fake KYC documents to acquire properties? This matter warrants a thorough investigation by the Centre,” Khera demanded.
In response to these accusations, Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked that “the desperation of Congress leaders has led them to drive Khera towards incarceration through their own actions.” He further alleged that Khera had disseminated another batch of completely falsified documents, which had already been discredited by their team. “This is no longer politics; it is blatant deceit. The Congress party has completely abandoned any sense of accountability. In just a few hours, the people of Assam will respond decisively, and the Congress leadership will face the consequences for this deception,” Himanta declared.
