The Guardian’s Perspective on Trump, Iran, and the Ceasefire: In War, Everyone Suffers | Editorial

On Wednesday morning, both the United States and Iran announced victories, though neither assertion was truthful. The ceasefire declared by President Donald Trump the previous night does not represent the success he claimed. It is uncertain if this temporary halt to hostilities will bring about a lasting peace or even endure for the entire two weeks. Trump suggested that Iran has undergone a change in its leadership, which is not accurate; instead, the current regime features less experienced but more hardline individuals. He also stated that the Strait of Hormuz would be open for navigation, while Iran countered that ships would require permission and payment to pass through.

By the evening of the same day, Iranian state media reported that the Strait had been closed in response to a severe Israeli airstrike on Lebanon, which involved around 100 attacks in just 10 minutes. Iran had claimed that Lebanon was included in the negotiations, a position that Trump disputed. This ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, including many children, leaving countless individuals traumatized and in fear, while those instigating the violence have brazenly admitted to intending to commit war crimes.

On Tuesday, Trump ominously warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” but by the end of the day, he stated that a peace agreement was “very far along.” The two parties are scheduled to convene in Islamabad on Friday, with Trump surprisingly accepting Iran’s 10-point proposal as a foundation for discussions. However, this proposal highlights deep divisions on critical issues such as sanctions relief, the status of the Strait of Hormuz, missile capabilities, and enriched uranium. The ongoing conflict has likely reinforced Tehran’s belief that possessing nuclear weapons is essential for its future security.

The US has expended vast sums, depleted its interceptor systems, and damaged relationships with allies. While Trump may not be concerned, having hinged his notion of victory on the reopening of a waterway that was operational before the conflict, the war has unsettled financial markets, increased domestic prices, and shown signs of fracturing his support base.

Trump seemed to take Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assurances of a swift and simple conflict at face value, but he soon found himself looking for a way out. After successfully persuading the US to align against Iran, Netanyahu has failed to achieve his objectives, confronting a more unpredictable and weakened adversary. The conflict has also strained Israel’s relationships with Gulf states and turned US public opinion, already soured by its actions in Gaza, more against it.

Although the Iranian regime can view its survival as a form of success, it faces significant challenges: senior leaders have been killed, its economy is in shambles, and critical infrastructure has been devastated, leading to increased repression of its populace.

With military exchanges occurring throughout the region on Wednesday, Gulf nations expressed their frustration. They did not wish for the war to commence, but now the US is retreating, leaving behind a more hostile and perilous Iran. Their reputations as safe havens for tourism and investment have been severely damaged, and vital maritime routes remain obstructed.

The conflict has destabilized the region and normalized discussions of war crimes, undermining the concept of a rules-based international order. Restrictions on movement will continue to obstruct humanitarian aid efforts and elevate prices globally, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations.

The only clear beneficiaries of this situation appear to be arms manufacturers, Russia—whose revenues from oil have increased—and potentially China, which at this moment seems to be a more stable and reliable power as the US shifts its focus away from the Pacific.

This situation represents a strategic setback for the US that will have repercussions for years to come, highlighting systemic failures within its approach. Nevertheless, given the high costs of this reckless and unlawful war, the most optimistic outcome might be Trump, in his typical fashion of rejecting reality, continuing to assert this situation as a victory.
