In contemporary cricket, few challenges are as daunting for batters as facing Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian fast bowler has gained a reputation as one of the most formidable bowlers in the game today, earning admiration from players across all formats.
Recently, Yuvraj Singh shared his experiences of facing a young Bumrah during a practice session in 2013. Speaking on The Overlap Cricket, hosted by Michael Vaughan, Yuvraj recounted the memorable encounter with Bumrah, who was just 16 at the time.
“While I was trying to re-establish myself in the Indian team after my battle with cancer, I found myself in the nets against this kid who was bowling at incredible speed. I exclaimed, ‘I want this kid to stop bowling to me!’ I felt overwhelmed and thought, ‘Whoever you are, just stop!’ I was attempting to focus on my game, and he was delivering some serious pace,” Yuvraj recalled.
Yuvraj mentioned that Bumrah later approached him to discuss that day, highlighting his own surprise at Yuvraj’s request to stop bowling. “He told me that he remembered my reaction, and I admitted it was because he was simply too fast,” Yuvraj remarked.
This conversation took place following the T20 World Cup semi-final against England, where Bumrah’s outstanding performance in the 18th over played a crucial role in turning the match in India’s favor. Yuvraj noted, “If Jasprit hadn’t bowled that over effectively, we would have been in trouble.”
When discussing the evolution of Bumrah from that young bowler to his current form, Yuvraj observed, “He certainly had a longer run-up back then. Although he may not have possessed the same level of skill, his speed was impressive. His unique action generates deceptive bounce, consistently challenging batsmen.”
Yuvraj went on to commend Bumrah’s abilities, stating, “Considering the progression of the game, he stands out as the best bowler. Opponents are hesitant to attack him; they prefer to rotate the strike and target other bowlers. Whenever they attempt to take him on, he prevents them from succeeding. His intelligence on the field, coupled with his exceptional skills and tricky bowling action, makes it difficult to read his slower deliveries.”
