Semyon Bychkov’s interpretation of Mahler with the Czech Philharmonic has been released gradually since 2022, with each symphony made available individually. However, Pentatone has opted for a more comprehensive approach by releasing a complete box set featuring the remaining four symphonies all at once. The previous installments have been captivating, with the Fourth and Fifth symphonies standing out particularly, but the newly released Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth symphonies elevate this collection to an esteemed level.

The Sixth symphony presents significant challenges, known for its relentless pace. Bychkov embraces the contrasts within the piece, allowing the “Alma theme” to radiate with intense emotion, while the slow movement sparkles with the clarity of a serene Austrian lake. The finale is powerful, and Bychkov’s thoughtful interpretation sheds light on even its darkest passages.

While the Seventh symphony is often considered difficult to interpret, Bychkov’s careful approach proves to be highly effective. The tempos and transitions in the lengthy opening movement flow seamlessly, the nocturnal sections are filled with imaginative details, and the finale delivers a striking impact that feels well-deserved.

The Eighth symphony, impressively cast and excellently recorded, ranks among the finest in the discography. Notably, at the conclusion of the first movement, all eight choral lines ascend in a vocal wave that is challenging to capture with microphones. Tennstedt comes close, but Bychkov achieves this thrilling climax with precision.

The Ninth symphony is masterfully constructed, with the harrowing disruptions in the opening movement leading to a sense of spiritual liberation in the finale. Throughout the performance, the Czech Philharmonic’s musicianship, particularly that of the woodwinds, remains flawless.
