Tyson Fury, in high spirits, has declared that his upcoming return to the boxing ring will commence with a decisive knockout of Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this Saturday evening. “This time will be different because, for the first time in ages, I’m taking on the role of the hunter,” Fury stated during the final press conference ahead of the fight. “I’m not the prey anymore, and history shows that when I’ve been the hunter, I’ve always come out on top.”
He continued, “I actually feel a bit sorry for Makhmudov because I intend to make an example out of him. He’s a large man, standing at six foot seven and weighing around 18 or 19 stone, but I’m going to knock him out cold. He’ll be lying on the canvas, looking up and thinking, ‘What just happened?’ But there’s no shame in that; he’s going up against the great Tyson Fury.”
Makhmudov, on the other hand, appeared unfazed by Fury’s bravado. While Fury was showcasing his characteristic flamboyance, Makhmudov remained focused on his phone and stated, “I’m thrilled to be here and can’t wait for Saturday night.”
The towering Russian from Dagestan added, “I feel no pressure because God has prepared me for this moment my entire life. I truly believe this is my time.”
Fury had announced his retirement from boxing once again in January 2025. However, just before reaching the one-year mark of his latest hiatus, he confirmed his return to the sport. “People are always questioning my retirements,” Fury remarked on Thursday night. “I’ve officially retired five times and meant it every time. I’ve successfully returned four times, and we’ll see on Saturday night if I can do it for a fifth, which I believe I can.”
He emphasized, “When I step away from boxing, I genuinely have no intention of coming back. But after a few months, the routine of everyday life—like dropping the kids off at school and walking the dog—becomes mundane. I start to miss boxing, the press conferences, and everything that comes with the big fights.”
Fury also shared that there were pivotal moments that influenced his decision to return, one being the recent car accident involving his long-time rival, Anthony Joshua, in Nigeria. “Hearing about the tragic loss of two of Joshua’s close friends was heartbreaking,” Fury noted. “I’ve always said that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed for anyone, and incidents like that really drive that point home. We must live each day as if it were our last and cherish every moment.”
After vowing to end Makhmudov’s challenge decisively, Fury flashed a broad smile, clearly enjoying the spectacle as Makhmudov lifted him during their final face-off for the media. As is typical for him, Fury radiated joy amidst the theatricality of promoting the fight, just as he does in the serious arena of boxing.
