Mother of Mark Gregory Seeks Answers About Her Son’s Disappearance from 35 Years Ago

In a tragic hit-and-run incident that occurred in Albany in 1991, Mark Edward Gregory lost his life, leaving his family yearning for clarity and closure. For over three decades, they have been burdened by persistent rumors and conjecture surrounding the events of that fateful night.

Following a recent case review, law enforcement has intensified their investigation and is actively seeking assistance from the public to shed light on the incident.

Ms. Gregory has faced the emotional toll of ongoing rumors regarding her son’s death. “It’s been shocking and terrible… it affects you deeply over time,” she remarked, reflecting on the relentless gossip circulating in Albany, located on Western Australia’s southern coast.

At the age of 28, Mark Edward Gregory, a father of two and a shearer, was struck by a vehicle while walking home from a party along Mercer Road on April 7, 1991. This tragic event unfolded in the semi-rural area of Walmsley, just 600 meters from his residence, where he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver involved in the accident has never come forward. Despite multiple investigations being reopened, authorities have yet to identify the person responsible.

On the night of the incident, Ms. Gregory was also at the party but left around midnight with Mark’s partner, Leanne, to attend to his two young children. “The next morning, I received a knock on the door informing me of his death,” she recounted.

The family continues to face unending speculation regarding the circumstances of Mark’s death. They have received unsolicited calls from strangers claiming knowledge of the case, while drunken individuals have shown up at their home with supposed information. Additionally, Mark’s daughter, Casey Greay, who was only two years old when her father died, has experienced harassment at her workplace from those spreading rumors.

Each new lead in the investigation reignites public interest in the case. “It’s so exhausting for everyone,” Casey commented. “And it’s incredibly upsetting,” added her grandmother, Ms. Gregory.

In a new effort to piece together the truth, detectives recently made public three anonymous letters linked to the night of Mark’s death. The letters, which are partially redacted, appear to originate from different individuals—two are handwritten while one is typed—and they contain various allegations regarding the identity of Mark’s killer. Authorities believe these letters may be crucial in unraveling the mystery and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Ms. Gregory’s family is cautious about their expectations after previous police appeals in 2014, 2016, and 2018 yielded no significant developments. “Every time they come here, we allow ourselves to feel hopeful, thinking this might lead to something,” Ms. Gregory expressed. “Yet nothing comes of it, and only more rumors circulate, leaving us uncertain about where to turn next.”

Nevertheless, Ms. Gregory remains optimistic that this time could be different. “I’m not getting any younger, and I’d like to have answers before I pass,” she stated. “Someone in this town knows something, and they just need to share it.”

“I believe we will always hold onto hope, which is why we continue to pursue this,” she added. “Hope is what keeps us going.”
