Putin Declares Ceasefire in Ukraine for Orthodox Easter Celebrations

Vladimir Putin has announced a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine coinciding with the Orthodox Easter weekend, following a previous request from Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a temporary halt in hostilities.

The Kremlin issued a decree on Thursday instructing Russian forces to implement a ceasefire beginning at 4 PM on Saturday and continuing until the end of Sunday.

Zelenskyy had suggested earlier in the week that both sides refrain from targeting each other’s energy infrastructure during the holiday period. He communicated this proposal through the United States, which has been facilitating discussions between representatives from Moscow and Kyiv as Russia’s military actions extend into a fifth year.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from Kyiv regarding Putin’s declaration.

Previous attempts to establish ceasefires have largely been ineffective. Last Easter, Putin announced a 30-hour ceasefire, but both sides accused each other of violations.

The statement from the Kremlin regarding the ceasefire indicated, “Orders have been issued to halt hostilities in all directions during this timeframe,” and emphasized that troops must remain vigilant against any potential provocations or aggressive actions from the opposing side.

The statement further expressed hope that “the Ukrainian side will emulate the actions of the Russian Federation.”

Russia has previously dismissed a 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by the US and Ukraine last year, favoring a more comprehensive resolution instead, while also announcing several short-term unilateral ceasefires.

Discussions led by the US have not yielded significant progress on fundamental issues, and attention from Washington has shifted towards the conflict in the Middle East, as Russian and Ukrainian forces continue to engage on the extensive 800-mile (1,250-km) frontline.
