Shining interiors and eco-friendly design: Noida airport readies for inaugural flights

Twelve days following the official inauguration of the Noida International Airport (NIA) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, construction activities are in full swing as workers strive to prepare the facility for its anticipated users in the coming months.

The interior of the terminal is nearly ready to welcome passengers, featuring a polished floor made of locally sourced red granite that shines brightly.

According to a site supervisor during a media tour on Thursday afternoon, “The airport’s construction is approximately 80% complete. Only a few remaining tasks, including electrical installations, the setup of CCTV security cameras, and the establishment of a functional gas supply, are left to finish, and these will be completed shortly.”

The airport covers an area of 1,334 hectares and will be developed in four phases, with Phase 1 expected to accommodate up to 12 million passengers annually. Officials confirmed that a 3,900-meter runway is ready for incoming flights.

An official from Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) stated, “We are awaiting the finalization of the Airport Security Program (ASP). Once this is completed, we can commence operations with domestic flights in approximately 45 days.”

“Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa have expressed interest in launching services from the airport. Following the ASP’s completion, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will assign flight slots. International and cargo services are projected to begin by the end of the year,” the official added.

Situated in Jewar, Greater Noida, roughly 40 kilometers from Pari Chowk, the airport is designed to cater to a substantial population within Delhi, the National Capital Region (NCR), and parts of Western Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, it will position the capital alongside Mumbai as a city hosting two major airports.

The airport’s design reflects the culture and heritage of Uttar Pradesh, highlighting its sacred cities and rivers. Officials noted that the facility will feature cutting-edge technology and amenities aimed at maximizing passenger comfort and convenience.

“Passengers will be able to utilize the Digiyatra app on their smartphones to navigate seamlessly from the terminal entrance to the boarding gate,” an official explained.

Terminal 1 spans 137,985 square meters and will include 48 check-in counters and 20 baggage drop-off points. To expedite security processes, nine security lanes have been planned, along with ten domestic gates equipped with aerobridges initially.

The airport’s design prioritizes environmental sustainability, incorporating ample natural light and bamboo seating in the waiting area. Charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) will be available, and there will be an all-electric fleet operating in the airside area, according to officials.

While there are proposals for a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) connecting to the airport, the project will commence with conventional transportation options, including taxis and buses.
