A 20-year-old male has been apprehended following an incident in which a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in San Francisco during the early hours of Friday. The San Francisco Police Department reported that the event transpired around 4 a.m. local time, when the suspect allegedly launched an “incendiary destructive device” at the home, igniting part of the exterior gate before fleeing the scene on foot.
The reasons behind the attack remain unclear at this time.
In a recent statement, the San Francisco Police confirmed that an arrest was made and that there were no reported injuries resulting from the incident. They also mentioned that the same individual later approached OpenAI’s offices and allegedly threatened to set the building ablaze. Authorities stated that charges against the individual have not yet been established.
This is not the first time OpenAI’s premises have faced security threats. In November, the company’s headquarters was temporarily locked down after a man reportedly made violent threats at several OpenAI locations in San Francisco. Additionally, protests have occurred this year outside the firm’s office in Mission Bay.
A spokesperson for OpenAI expressed gratitude for the prompt response from the San Francisco Police and the city’s assistance in ensuring employee safety, confirming that the suspect is in custody and the company is cooperating with ongoing investigations.
Later that day, Altman addressed the incident in a blog post, sharing a photo of his spouse and child. He expressed hope that his message might deter similar acts in the future, irrespective of public sentiment about him.
In his post, Altman also referenced a recent provocative article about him, likely alluding to a piece from The New Yorker that questioned his credibility. He remarked, “Now I am awake in the middle of the night and angry, reflecting on how powerful words and narratives can be,” and went on to discuss his perspectives on artificial intelligence, the industry, and his actions.
“I am a flawed person in the middle of an extraordinarily complex situation, trying to improve each year while staying committed to the mission,” he concluded.
