Keir Starmer emphasizes that continued NATO membership aligns with the United States’ best interests.

Keir Starmer has emphasized the importance of the United States remaining a member of NATO, urging European nations to enhance their support for the alliance in response to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

During a recent multi-nation visit to the Gulf region, where he discussed the fragile ceasefire and the prospects for reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz, the British Prime Minister countered former President Donald Trump’s threats to withdraw from the defense pact.

Trump has openly criticized NATO’s European members, particularly for their lack of involvement in military actions against Iran, while suggesting that he might consider pulling the U.S. out of the alliance entirely.

Starmer, who concluded his trip in Qatar after meetings with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, supported Trump’s advocacy for increased defense spending among NATO’s European allies while asserting that it is beneficial for the U.S. to remain in the alliance. “We are staunch supporters of NATO and have been advocating for greater contributions for some time,” he stated. “It is the most effective military alliance in history.”

He further acknowledged, “Do we Europeans need to step up? Absolutely. I have been making this case to our European partners for nearly two years. We will continue to advocate for this.”

Starmer remarked, “This is in America’s interest and in Europe’s interest. NATO serves as a defensive alliance that has significantly enhanced our safety over the decades.” He expressed confidence in a stronger European role within NATO, stating, “We should actively participate in that space, and we are already doing so by coordinating strategically with our NATO partners.”

During a conversation with Trump on Thursday evening, Starmer revealed that they focused on ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for oil, gas, and other commodities, which has faced disruptions following attacks involving the U.S. and Israel.

Starmer highlighted the necessity of safeguarding this maritime route and preventing any situation where Iran might impose fees on passing ships. Earlier, Trump had suggested a “joint venture” with Iran to establish tolls for maritime traffic.

In detailing his discussions with Gulf leaders, Starmer noted a shared concern regarding the ceasefire’s precariousness, which is threatened by ongoing Israeli strikes on Lebanon and Iran’s warnings of potential retaliation. “The conversation swiftly shifted to the ceasefire, highlighting its fragility and the need for further efforts, with a strong consensus that the Strait of Hormuz must be included in any solution, and that there should be no tolls or restrictions on navigation,” he said.

Trump has exhibited unpredictable behavior as the conflict with Iran has not yielded the desired regime change or any significant U.S. achievements. His frustrations have manifested in derogatory remarks towards other global leaders, including Starmer, and in aggressive threats to Iran, such as warnings that the country’s “whole civilization will perish” if it does not comply with U.S. demands.

On Friday, UK Defense Secretary John Healey commented that, instead of fixating on Trump’s social media activity, the U.S. should focus on the UK’s tangible actions in the Gulf, which he believes speak volumes. While the UK opted out of direct strikes on Iran, it has made substantial contributions to protecting Gulf states from Iranian threats, including the successful interception of Iranian drones and missiles by UK forces. UK bases have also been made available to U.S. aircraft for missions deemed defensive in nature.

“Even in the current conflict, the permissions we have granted to the U.S. for basing have proven invaluable for their military operations,” Healey stated, adding, “If we prioritize our actions over mere rhetoric and social media exchanges, the essential principles remain intact.”
