In a tragic incident that unfolded in South Delhi’s Chattarpur area, a contractor was taken into custody on Friday, two days after a two-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool located at a farmhouse. The arrest was made on charges of negligence, as police discovered that the pool lacked essential safety features, such as barricades or reflective lights.

The contractor, identified as Raj Kiran, is under investigation, along with the pool’s owner, regarding their responsibilities in ensuring safety around the facility. The drowning incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 6 p.m. The young boy, whose parents were laborers at a nearby construction site, had wandered toward the farmhouse to play, a location he frequently visited while his family worked.

After the child failed to return for nearly an hour, his parents initiated a search. They ultimately discovered his clothing near the pool and found him submerged in the water, as reported by police. The family had moved from Begusarai, Bihar, around three months prior in search of employment and had settled near the farmhouse after securing jobs at a construction site.

Vipin, the boy’s maternal grandfather, recounted the day’s events, stating, “That evening, we were working at the construction site near the farmhouse while he was playing nearby. Around 6:15 p.m., he went back home after telling us he was hungry.” After being fed by his mother, the child expressed his intention to visit his aunt, who resided nearby. According to police, the boy was a regular visitor at his aunt’s home.

Vipin emphasized the child’s familiarity with the area, noting, “He would usually move around between the houses and come to the work site to play. He was well-acquainted with the surroundings.” He added, “We had never imagined something like this would happen. He would never go near the pool or touch the water.”
