UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced his discontent with US President Donald Trump in light of the current turmoil in West Asia, drawing a parallel between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During his visit to the Gulf region, Starmer expressed concern over the increasing cost of living in the UK, which he attributes to the conflict between Iran and the United States. In an interview with ITV, he stated, “I’m frustrated that families across the nation are facing fluctuating energy bills, and businesses are similarly affected due to the actions of global leaders like Putin and Trump.”
Starmer also criticized Trump regarding the recent Israeli military operations in Lebanon, asserting that such strikes are unacceptable. “These actions should cease – that’s my firm stance – and the debate shouldn’t revolve around whether it violates the agreement,” he emphasized.
Both the United States and Israel maintain that Lebanon is not included in the ceasefire agreement with Iran, a view that Tehran contests.
On the subject of the ceasefire, Starmer remarked, “We do not have full access to all the details surrounding the ceasefire.” He firmly stated, “Let me be clear – they are mistaken.”
Starmer also engaged in discussions with Donald Trump regarding military readiness and the logistics of transporting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing ceasefire. “We have been assembling a coalition of nations to work on both a political and diplomatic strategy, as well as considering military capabilities and the logistics of navigating the Strait,” the Prime Minister explained.
When asked about whether he addressed the US’s potential withdrawal from NATO with Trump, Starmer refrained from giving a direct answer but highlighted the importance of the alliance for both the United States and Europe.
