In a tragic incident, a member of the Border Security Force (BSF) who sustained injuries during a militant attack in the Ukhrul district of Manipur has unfortunately passed away, according to police reports.
The individual has been identified as Mithun Mandal, originally from West Bengal. Authorities stated that Mandal was shot in the left shoulder while conducting patrol duties in the Mongkot Chepu region around 4:30 PM. He was promptly taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Manipur’s Chief Minister, Y Khemchand Singh, expressed his outrage over the incident and extended his sympathies to the bereaved family. He condemned the loss of Constable Mithun Mandal, stating, “I strongly condemn the tragic martyrdom of Constable Mithun Mandal (170 Bn, BSF), who was mortally wounded by a bullet from an unknown direction while on patrol in Mongkot Chepu, Ukhrul.”
The Manipur police also paid tribute to the fallen constable, affirming their respect for Mithun Mandal from Bhagjan Tola village, West Bengal. In their statement, they remarked, “Manipur Police pay homage to BSF jawan Mithun Mandal, who was martyred on April 10, 2026, after being caught in unprovoked fire from militants while on duty in the Litan area, Ukhrul district.” They further noted that security forces are actively conducting search operations to apprehend the attackers.
The Litan area of Ukhrul district has been marked by rising tensions since February due to escalating conflicts between Kuki and Tangkhul villages. These clashes have resulted in the destruction of homes and have displaced numerous residents. In response, district authorities have implemented curfews, suspended internet services, and increased security personnel presence to restore order.
