Ipswich Town significantly enhanced their chances of automatic promotion with a well-fought 2-0 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road. Meanwhile, Coventry City’s aspirations were put on hold as they managed only a 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at home.
This win propelled Ipswich into the top two of the standings, and they now have at least one game in hand over their closest competitors. Jaden Philogene scored the opener from a contentious penalty, followed by George Hirst’s goal, marking a long-awaited double victory against their East Anglian rivals.
Despite having more possession, Norwich struggled to break through Ipswich’s solid defense, which minimized any clear scoring opportunities. This defeat dashed the Canaries’ slim playoff hopes, although securing a top 10 finish is still commendable for a team that found itself in the relegation zone earlier in the year.
Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich, expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “This is a brilliant result. From the outset, I was made aware of the significance of this match and the long gap since our last victory against them. We achieved a win at home earlier this season, and now we’ve secured the double.”
In contrast, Coventry missed the opportunity to come within one point of Premier League promotion after their match against relegated Sheffield Wednesday ended in a stalemate. Frank Lampard’s squad could have advanced if they had secured a win and if Middlesbrough had lost against Portsmouth later in the day.
Cardiff City took another step toward immediate Championship promotion following their 2-0 victory over Bolton, coupled with Bradford’s loss to another promotion contender. Omari Kellyman broke a near six-hour goal drought at home in the 50th minute, and shortly after, Chris Willock ensured the win, leaving Cardiff 11 points ahead of Bolton with just four matches remaining.
The day further favored the Bluebirds as Bradford, who sit in third place, fell 10 points behind them after losing 1-0 at home to Stevenage. Despite having only one shot on target, Stevenage secured three points thanks to Daniel Kemp’s goal. This victory strengthens Stevenage’s position in the playoff race, placing them four points clear after Plymouth’s 2-2 draw against Exeter, where the Pilgrims equalized twice through Lorent Tolaj and Malachi Boateng.
Lincoln, who have already secured promotion, are closing in on the League One title after a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient, with Jack Moylan and an own goal from William Forrester contributing to their success, while Dominic Ballard netted one for Leyton.
Wycombe Wanderers fought back to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw against Huddersfield, with Nathan Lowe initially giving them the lead. Despite Huddersfield looking poised for victory after goals from Ryan Ledson and Marcus Harness, Wycombe equalized twice, with Lowe scoring a late goal in stoppage time.
In other matches, Dale Taylor scored twice, and Tom Bloxham added another to help Blackpool achieve a 3-1 win over Peterborough, moving them four points clear of the relegation zone, despite a late red card for Fraser Horsfall. Meanwhile, Owen Bailey led Doncaster to a 1-0 victory against Reading, while Wigan triumphed over Mansfield 2-1 with contributions from Callum Wright and Joseph Taylor. Tom Bradshaw’s two goals helped Barnsley secure a 3-1 victory against Rotherham, and Kyran Lofthouse’s late goal gave Burton a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.
Sheffield Wednesday managed to earn their third point of the season, breaking a Football League record by going 37 matches without a win across all competitions.
Frank Lampard commented on his team’s performance, noting, “We created enough chances to win but fell short, crediting the opposition for making it a challenging match. There’s pressure to perform and release that tension, but now we must focus on the next game.”
Millwall, who had briefly moved into second place, faced a setback with a 0-0 draw against West Brom at home. Despite generating several opportunities, they were unable to capitalize, with Josh Coburn missing a close chance and Mihailo Ivanovic hitting the bar.
Middlesbrough had an opportunity to capitalize on Millwall’s draw but suffered a shocking last-minute defeat at home to Portsmouth. The visitors scored their first shot on target in stoppage time, with Andre Dozzell’s volley deflecting off Conor Chaplin to seal victory, ending an eight-game winless streak for Portsmouth.
Middlesbrough has now gone six matches without a win, falling three points behind Ipswich, who have two games in hand. Portsmouth, meanwhile, avoided slipping into the relegation zone thanks to Chaplin’s late goal, keeping them just above the bottom three.
Kim Hellberg expressed his disappointment with Middlesbrough’s lackluster performance, stating, “The first half was dreadful. I must have failed in my preparations because the team lacked energy and urgency. It was boring and passive, which is disappointing.”
In another encounter, late goals from Gustavo Hamer and substitute Danny Ings prevented Hull City from solidifying their playoff position, as Sheffield United emerged victorious with a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United’s Oli McBurnie opened the scoring early, and after John Lundstram was sent off, United took control of the match to secure valuable points against the playoff contenders.
Southampton continued to climb the standings, coming from behind to defeat Derby County 2-1 at St Mary’s.
