The Chennai Super Kings secured their first victory of the season with a 23-run triumph over the Delhi Capitals at Chepauk on Saturday. Key contributions came from Tristan Stubbs, who scored a half-century, and Pathum Nissanka, who added 41 runs. However, the Delhi Capitals struggled with consistent wicket losses, ending their innings at 189 runs after 20 overs.
Prominent batsmen for Delhi, including KL Rahul (18), Sameer Rizvi (6), Axar Patel (1), David Miller (17), and Ashtosh Sharma (19), were unable to make significant contributions, while Jamie Overton excelled with the ball, taking four wickets.
Earlier in the match, Sanju Samson broke free from a slow start to the IPL 2026 season, scoring a dazzling century, while Ayush Mhatre showcased his potential with a solid half-century, helping the Chennai Super Kings to a formidable total of 212 for two.
Samson’s explosive innings of 115 runs off 56 balls, which included 15 fours and 4 sixes, was pivotal for Chennai, marking one of their stronger performances with the bat this IPL season.
After being invited to bat first, Samson delivered his first notable performance while donning the CSK jersey, forming a crucial partnership with Mhatre that yielded 113 runs in just over 11 overs for the second wicket.
This marked Samson’s fourth IPL century, and it was also the first for CSK as well as the first of the IPL 2026 season.
A substantial innings from Samson was vital for both his own confidence and for reassuring the loyal CSK supporters, and he succeeded in impressing the home crowd with his exceptional batting display.
This innings reflected the classic style of Samson. After appearing uncertain in earlier matches this season, he returned to form, demonstrating excellent footwork, coordination, and shot selection.
Despite captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s inability to accelerate during the Power Play, the opening partnership of 62 runs was heavily reliant on Samson’s aggressive play.
Samson signaled his return to form with two consecutive boundaries off pacer Mukesh Kumar, and a standout moment came when he hit a six over extra cover against left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Fortune smiled upon Samson as he was dropped on 55 by Pathum Nissanka near long-off off Axar Patel, a mistake the Delhi Capitals would regret as he capitalized on the opportunity. He reached his fifty in 26 balls, one ball faster than Mhatre, and completed his hundred in 52 balls as CSK continued to build their innings smoothly.
Mhatre, meanwhile, was a delight to watch until he was retired out to allow Shivam Dube, known for his power-hitting, a chance to bat. His performance had already enthralled the Chepauk audience with a series of stylish shots.
