Delhi mandates that schools incorporate a minimum of 10% electric buses for student transportation within the next two years.

The government has proposed a new draft electric vehicle (EV) policy that mandates Delhi schools to convert at least 10 percent of their bus fleets to electric within the next two years. This initiative aims to set a definitive timeline for the integration of electric vehicles in educational institutions.

According to the draft, the target for electric bus adoption will rise to 20 percent by the end of the third year following the policy’s notification and further increase to 30 percent by March 31, 2030.

This requirement encompasses all types of school buses, including those that are owned, leased, or hired, ensuring that the entire fleet is included in the transition to electric vehicles.

The responsibility for enforcing compliance with this EV policy will fall on the education department. It will issue necessary guidelines, incorporate these requirements into school recognition and affiliation processes, and work in collaboration with the transport department to monitor adherence to the policy.

Additionally, the draft suggests the implementation of regular awareness campaigns and educational initiatives within schools to inform students, teachers, and administrators about air pollution, its adverse effects on health and the environment, and the steps being taken to enhance air quality in the capital.

It also advocates for student-led projects and practical actions aimed at promoting sustainable transportation options, energy efficiency, and responsible environmental practices.

The gradual transition of school buses to electric vehicles is anticipated to significantly contribute to the reduction of vehicular emissions, given their extensive and routine operation throughout the city.

An official notification has stated that the draft policy for 2026-2030 is now available on the transport department’s website, inviting public feedback and comments for a period of 30 days.

Initially introduced in August 2020 as a significant initiative by the previous administration, the Delhi EV policy seeks to address vehicular pollution and encourage the use of electric vehicles in the region. Although the policy’s initial three-year term concluded in August 2023, the government has continued to extend its provisions.
