Delhi Woman Detained for Allegedly Extorting ₹17 Lakh from Uttar Pradesh Police Officer Under the Pretense of Marriage and Conversion

On Saturday, law enforcement officials in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, apprehended a 30-year-old woman from Delhi on accusations of coercing a police constable to convert to Islam and demanding money in return for her promise to testify in his defense regarding a rape allegation she had previously filed against him in 2021. The constable, aged 35 and recently bereaved of his wife, is stationed in Baghpat.

According to police reports, the constable claimed that the woman pressured him to embrace Islam, assuring him that she would provide a favorable statement regarding the rape case and marry him after leaving her current spouse. However, despite his conversion, she failed to follow through on her promises, neither marrying him nor separating from her husband. Instead, she and her accomplices purportedly continued to extort significant sums from him, totaling approximately Rs 17 lakh, under the guise of assisting him with the legal matter.

Following the constable’s allegations, authorities initiated a case against the woman and five other individuals, including her husband and a religious cleric. Rohan Chaurasia, the investigating officer and circle officer of Baghpat, confirmed the woman’s arrest and indicated that efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining suspects.

The constable reported his ordeal to the police, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against the woman. He recounted that his initial interaction with her occurred through her husband while he was stationed in Ghaziabad. Their communication evolved, resulting in regular phone conversations and frequent visits to their home.

In 2021, a conflict led the woman to file a rape complaint against the constable in Delhi, resulting in his arrest and subsequent imprisonment. After his release, he reconnected with her, during which she promised to support him in the legal case and to marry him if he converted to Islam. The Delhi Police later submitted a chargesheet related to the case against the constable.

During this period, the constable alleged that the woman, along with her associates, extorted approximately Rs 17 lakh from him, claiming they were aiding him in the case. He stated that he converted to Islam and attended religious gatherings multiple times under her pressure.

A police officer remarked, “Despite fulfilling her requests, the woman did not provide the promised statement in his favor, did not marry him, and also failed to refund the money.” This led the constable to seek assistance from the police and formally file a complaint against her and others involved.

The charges filed include criminal intimidation, deliberate and malicious acts intended to insult religious sentiments, and extortion. Furthermore, the authorities have invoked the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act in the ongoing investigation. Additionally, the involvement of the woman’s husband is being scrutinized as part of the case.
