A brief exchange between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi during a program in Parliament on Saturday, commemorating the birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, captured the attention of those in attendance.
This interaction was notable, as the two leaders typically limit their exchanges to polite greetings at public functions. Reports indicate that Modi asked about the health of Rahul Gandhi’s mother, Sonia Gandhi, who serves as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Rahul responded with a nod.
The conversation took place in the presence of several dignitaries, including Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers J P Nadda and Arjun Ram Meghwal, and former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The leaders shared pleasantries while acknowledging each other.
Sonia Gandhi was unable to participate in the Congress Working Committee meeting on Friday regarding the women’s reservation amendment Bill and the delimitation plan due to health issues that required her hospitalization. She was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 31.
After paying tribute to Mahatma Phule, Modi expressed his thoughts on social media platform X, stating, “I paid homage to Mahatma Phule in the Parliament complex. May his ideals continue to provide strength and hope to countless individuals.” He praised Phule as a visionary reformer committed to principles of equality, justice, and education, noting that this year marks the beginning of celebrations for Phule’s 200th birth anniversary.
Modi added, “May his thoughts remain a guiding force for everyone striving for societal advancement.” Meanwhile, Gandhi also took to X, remarking, “On the birth anniversary of the esteemed social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule ji, I offer my sincere respects. He devoted his life to safeguarding the rights of the marginalized, and his fight against discrimination illuminated the path toward equality and justice for our nation.”
