Gout Gout advances to 200m final following Lachlan Kennedy’s withdrawal from national competition.

Teenage sprinting sensation Gout Gout has shattered his own national record for the 200 meters, achieving a remarkable time of 19.67 seconds at the athletics championships held in Sydney. This performance makes him the first Australian athlete to officially break the 20-second barrier in favorable conditions.

Fellow competitor Aidan Murphy put pressure on the 18-year-old throughout the race, finishing with an impressive time of 19.88 seconds, marking the second-fastest 200 meters recorded by an Australian, aided by a tailwind of +1.7m/s.

Previously, Gout held the national record of 20.02 seconds and had clocked a wind-aided time of 19.84 seconds at last year’s Australian Athletics Championships. However, he surpassed both of those performances in the final on Sunday.

The race unfolded at a rapid pace, particularly after the withdrawal of newly crowned 100m champion Lachie Kennedy, who pulled out of the highly anticipated 200m event just hours before the heats commenced on Sunday morning.

The decision meant fans at Sydney Olympic Park missed the chance to see a rematch between Kennedy and Gout, as Kennedy had triumphed in their previous encounter at the Maurie Plant Meet last month.

After winning the 100m event on Saturday night, Kennedy expressed uncertainty about his ability to compete in the 200m, saying, “Wait and see. See how that body pulls up. I’ll listen to the experts, physios, and all that, but we’ll see.”

Australian Athletics confirmed Kennedy’s withdrawal before the competition began on Sunday. According to his management, his decision was precautionary, especially considering it was only his third competition of the year as he prepares for a busy season that includes the World Relays Championship next month, the Diamond League series, and the Commonwealth Games in July.

The anticipated rematch was expected to be a highlight of the national championships, with Kennedy acknowledging the expectations of the fans. He stated, “I don’t want to promise anything and then not deliver, but we’ll see how it goes. Either way, it’ll be good competition tomorrow whether I’m there or not.”

Last year, Kennedy had participated in the 200m at the national titles but was disqualified prior to the final, where Gout secured his first national title. After suffering a stress fracture in his back, Kennedy has emphasized the importance of allowing his body to recover properly.

In the men’s 800m event, Peter Bol successfully defended his title against rising star Daniel Williams. Although Williams took the lead on the back straight, Bol maintained his composure, overtook him, and finished ahead of Luke Boyes and Bob Abdelrahim, with Williams placing fourth.

“I’m still surviving out here; it’s not getting any easier,” Bol remarked. “There’s so much passion and so many young guys coming up, and it’s great that they’re pushing hard. They also motivate me to improve.”

In the women’s 800m, Abbey Caldwell triumphed over Claudia Hollingsworth, overtaking the 1500m champion with just 60 meters remaining in the race.
