As she prepares for the release of her 18th studio album, “In Times of Dragons,” and embarks on her first tour in three years, Tori Amos is confronting the harsh realities of the world in her unique style. She embodies a character that is a blend of a Celtic goddess and a dragon-woman, using this persona to explore themes of democracy versus tyranny in her upcoming music. One of the standout tracks from the album, “Shush,” delivers a dark, atmospheric narrative that unfolds like a southern gothic story, featuring a struggle against a sinister billionaire lizard demon husband. This dramatic and immersive approach is characteristic of Amos’s ability to tackle profound themes with elegance and fluidity.
Instead of focusing solely on her new album, Amos chooses to delve into her extensive and diverse body of work. She performs a range of songs, from the poignant “Ruby Through the Looking-Glass” to the jazzy, slow-burning vibes of “Little Amsterdam.”
The admiration from the audience for Amos is unmistakable. Her powerful voice, intricate piano skills, and evocative lyrics create a nearly devotional atmosphere, with every note captivating the crowd. Accompanied by a drummer and a bassist, Amos also features three backing vocalists, whom she affectionately refers to as her “angels.” While their contributions sometimes overshadow the intimate connection typically expected in her performances, their harmonies enhance songs like “Pandora’s Aquarium” and elevate the uplifting rhythm of “Witness” to new heights.
Although the setlist does not rely heavily on chart-topping hits, the performance concludes beautifully with “Crucify,” delivered in a manner that feels both tight and relaxed, intricate yet expansive, and tender while still stirring. The encore, featuring the early favorite “Cornflake Girl,” has the audience on their feet, captivated by the experience. While Amos may adopt the guise of a lizard queen to reflect on the turmoil of today’s world, she has a devoted following ready to journey with her into the depths of any metaphorical dragon’s lair.
Tori Amos will perform at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on April 10, continuing her UK and Ireland tour until April 21, and extending her international tour until July 7.
